as leigh martinez reports, a woman who lives there telling what happened after she smelled smoke this morning. >> she believes the fire started in or around the garage. you can see how gutted that garage is, there's some damage to the vehicle in the driveway. fire crews finished mopping up early this morning, the red cross is assisting the family. fire crews were en route when they were told officers were at the house fire and they were trapped inside. they went into rescue ready, everyone had made it out safely. a second arm was called, and it took firefighters an hour to get under control. there's an extensive fire damage in the majority of the house and one vehicle was damaged. it's unknown if the home is a total loss. one resident said she called 911 after 1:00 a.m. and doesn't know how the fire started. >> it's more comfy, maybe a few -- [ audio too soft ] >> the kitchen lights are on and i don't see anything, i -- anything, i -- >>> the power lines came down on the residence, but the cause of the fire is under investigation. 8 people including three children are now without thei

let's bring in leigh martinez live at the scene for the update. >> reporter: firefighters say that two of the buildings still have active fire. they are still battling the fire inside the buildings. the buildings are the ones that were the furthest along towards their completion in the construction project. it is a total of six buildings in a townhome complex three stories high. significant damage. there are four buildings that are total losses. it is unknown at this time about the two that are still burning. we still have some drone video shot by the alameda county sheriff's office. better visibility through the smoke and that is the biggest challenge for firefighters. the call came in at 1:59 am. fire crews called in a two alarm fire at the site with visible. it escalated to a 5 alarm with 90 oakland fire personnel working. 25 to 30 people were evacuated off of myrtle street as a precaution. large embers were seen high in the air. there was a threat of exposure to other nearby buildings. one building at 800 block of isabel caught fire. crews were able to put it out quickly. fire crew

as ktvu's leigh martinez reports firefighters rescued that men using new technology. >> reporter: san francisco fire officials say the man suffered several injuries and appears to have been hit by the train. at 9:17 this morning, the san francisco fire department raced to the jig to station on a report that a man was trapped under the tracks. >> he was trapped under the train and by the side of the train. as the train hit the individual, within the parameters of the train station, he was trapped within that void area. >> reporter: firefighters used new wireless excavation technology to rescue the man. >> traditionally, if you have seen the jaws of life, they would have large chords. that would be cumbersome because you would have to carry a generator down. you would have the courts. the new tools have a little bit more power. they are battery-operated, lighter, easier to utilize and we were able to utilize those today. >> the excavation took firefighters 30 minutes. the man was transported to the san francisco general hospital in critical condition but officials say he was conscious.
