correspondent for "the new york times" and leigh ann caldwell covers congress for nbc news. leigh ann, give us a sense, how did it go with the speaker saying let's not go with impeachment or the back benchers, who is winning? >> that's a good way to put it, chris. so there does seem to be a mood shift among house democrats on the issue of impeachment and also on these investigations. since the mueller report has come out. i'm told by two sources who were on the call that everyone was very concerned about the status of the country and the way that the president has been acting. and so there is a shift in the appetite for continuing investigations, but we don't yet see any talk of impeachment from the leadership, and that's where it really matters. the chairman of six important committees went through line by line on what they were investigating and were going to continue to investigate, and they said they were going to use every single tool in their

leigh ann caldwell is there live. how did the message land with reporters?reporter: he just finished up so we haven't spoken to any supporters but leading into the speech they're intrigued of what he had to say. of course he was the home-town candidate. he lives down the street from here in downtown newark. but this is a speech of soaring democratic ideals and rhetoric. he checked all of the boxes as far as issues are concerned. medicare for all, lgbtq, and women's economic and equality and rights. path to citizenship for immigration and he challenged donald trump's divisiveness. but that wasn't the only shot he took. he challenged this idea of a progressive perfection. this idea that a democratic candidate in the primary has to be -- there has to be a purity test to be a progressive. he said, look, we will not take our community hostage for the idea of perfection. he said incremental change is as good change and will lead to the path to get there so it is an excited crowd behind me. there is a lot of music. people were cheering and loved a lot of points in

thank you nbc's hans nichols and leag leigh ann caldwell. right now we have to turn to the supreme court, because it is just minutes away from hearing its highest profile case of the current term and it has to do with the upcoming census. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams live outside the supreme court. pooe pete, what is this all about? >> reporter: this is all about a decision by wilbur ross to add a question to the short form that goes to every household in the united states. the census is required by the constitution. it says every ten years, there shall be, in the words of the constitution, an actual enumeration. it determines how many seats a state gets in the house of representatives and also is used, for example, to figure out how much money states get in various federal programs, highway construction, medicaid, and so forth. now, many states led by new york, 18, exactly, sued, saying that this violates the federal law about how you get a question on the census. and the separate law said it also violates the institution, b
