he says: leigh ann, we have been talking about the difficulties on the extreme sides of both parties.re hearing from some of the more far right members the republican party? reactions are starting to come in. but bob good is somebody i didn't expect to support this. and there is a whole host of members. i would actually be shocked if any members of the freedom caucus, there might be a couple who do support this, but i think that republican leadership went into this knowing is that the freedom caucus, there are about three dozen of them, they probably aren't gettable in the situation anyway. when republicans decided to force the administration to negotiate on the debt limit by tying it to government spending, the freedom caucus was always saying that the bill that the republicans passed that cut spending like you said by $4 trillion over ten years is their bottom line. that is what needs to be agreed to. most republicans have been saying, well, this isjust our opening offer. and, so, there was really a disconnect there between the freedom caucus and most in the republican party but the

leigh ann, what do you hearing, what is the latest?moment? what is happening on the hill? >> what's happening right now, michael, is that republicans are actually on a conference call as we speak. kevin mccarthy the speaker of the house is updating on the parameters of the bill. and what this is is it's really mccarthy and his leadership's team's first check on where his members stand. we are told that there is going to be a white house briefing for democratic house members tomorrow. so while this agreement in principle has apparently been reached, there is still a lot of challenges ahead. especially finding the 218 votes. we are going to see if they're able to do that. speaker mccarthy said that there is going to be a vote on wednesday. michael? >> let's talk a little bit about the first check idea. do you think it would have made a little bit more strategy or politics too have the agreement between the principles, then take that back to the members and get a temperature read before he announced that we have this tentative deal? have

. >> joining us now, leigh ann caldwell. congressional reporter for the "new york times," luke broadwater and chief white house correspondent for the "new york times" peter baker. thanks to all of you for being with us. leigh ann, walk us through the last 48 to 72 hours how we got here. how did this agreement get nailed down between the president and house speaker. >> so, there was obviously these negotiations going on. real intense negotiations more than a week. it was hit or miss for a long time. then the white house team, the omb director, the top white house adviser and they were talking to patrick mchenry and derek graves and the way that this deal finally came together is that they realized how they could find 218 votes. they had to go through every issue and try to come up with the best possible scenario and combination of policies that they think could pass the house of representatives. that's ultimately the key here. now, what they did not do is did not go back and forth between their members during the negotiations
