leland vittert is streaming live now from donetsk with the latest. hi, leland. >> reporter: hi, and today in odessa even more violence. very important because it shows just how widespread this russian separatist movement is, that some 500 miles southwest of where we are and where this insurgency began. it's now moved to the city and today pro-russian separatists tried to storm the police headquarters where a number of their comrades from friday's violence were being held. they demanded their release, and they got some of them out. we are now hearing that there are pro-ukrainian groups organizing to come take on the pro-russian separatists for what certainly could end up being a repeat of the 40 dead or certainly the violence that we saw there on friday. the ukrainian violence continues to blame the russians for instigating this violence in odessa as they do blame the russians for continuing to support the insurgency here in the eastern part of the country, and despite the best efforts of the ukrainian military, it's very difficult to see how they are

hi, leland. >> reporter: hi, arthel. the independent international observers being released is the only bit of good news coming out of this crisis that is quickly spiralling out of control. this really began as an insurgency, and is now quickly heightening in terms of its severity and its breadth into a civil war here in ukraine. latest pictures out of one of the pro rebel strong holds, those russian separatists taking on the ukrainian army as it moved in its armored personnel carriers into the town. the ukrainian military is now about 36 hours into their offensive. they were able to take back a tv station and also an intelligence building that had been occupied by the separatists. however, the ukrainian military has not been able to make its way into the pro-russian stronghold of slavsions. this is spreading to the key port city for the ukrainians on the black sea. yesterday there were 30-plus people killed when they were running street battles between the ro-russian separatists and the ukrainians, both the riot police

leland vitter streaming live with the latest. leland? >> reporter: and at this hour, that unrest in odessa continues and it's really important to look at it in the larger scale, odessa is it 500 miles, now spreading south and west after it started into this very key pro city. those pro russian separatist went to the -- who had been involved in friday's violence. they got it. there is a new police chief in town that is now trying to calm the situation, but now we hear there is a pro ukrainian crowd. ukrainians haven't been able to do much about it. we saw yesterday the video of those armored personnel carriers -- today they moved out. they appeared to be outdunned and outmaneuvered by the pro russian separatist. just to give you an idea of how the numbers are shaping up hire. they have managed to take back just three buildings that the separatist have taken over. on the other side, the pro russian accept it is attacks have taken over 20 additional buildings than the one they had. and the numbers on the microview really tell the story. obv

what is the latest on the rescue, leland? >> jon, there is not much good news coming out of turkey right now. in the words of an official on the ground there, hopes are diminishing when it comes to the rescue operation. it has been just about 12 hours since they pulled anyone out of that wreckage alive. the wreckage underground there, from that coal mine and this really is a daunting rescue effort that is underway. 400 rescuers, they have to trek about a quarter of a mile into the coal mine and pull each victim out by hand and they're having to do that as they're fighting some very dangerous gases that have built up there in that mine since the fire and explosion yesterday that occurred. evidently some kind of power distribution panel there was an explosion, then a large fire there and obviously well over 200 people are now confirmed dead. this happened right at shift change there in the mine. so there was a much greater number of people, seven hundred plus people there inside of the mine at the time of this. obviously that h

leland vittert is streaming live in donetsk, ukraine, with the latest. leland? >> reporter: molly, certainly what has been an insurgency by those pro-russian separatists is keeping this country on the verge of civil war. the ukraine military has launched a major offensive to take back towns and buildings that have been taken over in the past week by these pro-russian separatists. earlier today, armored personnel carriers moving into a town near one of the russian strong holds. they were able to take back a tv center in the town and also able to take back one of the intelligence buildings there. however, they have not been able to fight their way into the main stronghold of slovyansk, where the russian militants are still holed up. there have been casualties on both sides. and the violence is spreading both west and south to the key port city of odessa. yesterday we saw clashes there between the ukrainian fighters, ukrainian riot police, pro-ukrainian supporters and russian separatists. 30 people died in those clashes. at one point the main pro-russian stronghold
