we want to check in with leland as well.he waters continue to rise where you are. what are the latest conditions? >> it's important to note the water here is rising and you can see the dock we have been watching lift up and at times look like it's about to snap off. the tide is going out. the water is rising. that gives you a sense of how strong the storm surge is. we are about six hours into the really bad conditions in morehead city. you think to yourself, normally that would be good news, the tide is going out but conceivably, there is a whole another tide cycle, 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. these conditions continue, when you have the potential for the storm surge plus high tides inundating the city. you will combine all of this water that we see now starting to lap up with these after 40 inches of rain that is then going to collide tomorrow upstream here up into coastal carolina, where you have the potential for what they are calling truly catastrophic flooding, echoing what steve had to say in terms of the wind, we have not se

nice work, leland vittert fred will get back to you.n the meantime, meteorologist alan claus is monitoring the storm and joined us from the fox extreme weather center. >> the storm continues to just crawl down the carolina coast. that is now in south carolina, just outside of the myrtle beach area. there is your center of circulation. there it is again, just off toward the rest of myrtle beach. such a slow mover, you are looking at williamson, that is where we initially saw that landfall, only about 85 miles away from where the storm sits. everything behind it, it's been seeing the wind, rain, throughout the entire day, which means it's had a lot of time to build up that rainfall. there the rainfall is, you see most of the action back on the eastern side of the storm. particularly, lines of creating storms stretching across these areas, and that is where these have been climbing before because, as moisture has been picked up a the ocean and is dumping heavy rain. still at this point, several locations we are looking at rainfall totals u

chris: leland vittert reporting from atlantic beach. leland, thank you.ning us now from fema headquarters here in washington is brock long, the head of that an overview. hurricane florence done, how much more damage is it likely to do in the days and even weeks ahead? >> yeah, you know, unfortunately, we've still got several days to go. not only are you going to see more impacts across north carolina particularly as it moves from the central to the amounts of rains, but we're also anticipating you're about to see a lot of damage going through west virginia, all the way up to ohio as this system exits out. chris: i saw an astonishing figure that this storm is going to dump enough rain to fill chesapeake be bay, trillions%ñ?? of -- chesapeake bay, trillions of gallons of rain. how much damage is this going to do in terms of inland flooding or rivers -- of rivers, and how do you compare this storm in terms of inundating an area to last year's hurricane harvey? think -- hurricane harvey's a little bit different than what we're seeing. i think if you wanted to

we have seen dozens of rescues here in the town of leland. some of them came from homes on the other side of that flooded road. if you keep looking to your left there, you will see down to the intersection of i 140 and i-17, that's a car up to its roof in water there in the middle of the intersection. at least as you mentioned two of the reports deaths involve vehicles in high water. beyond this intersection, a couple of subdivisions, one woman who was rescued from there told me that in 25 years her home had never flooded until now. in fact, dozens were evacuated in high water transport vehicles carrying the clothes that they could and their pets. one man in a wheelchair brought out. one resident shared photos with me where you can see some vehicles with water above the door and several feet of water inside their homes. we spoke to one of the persons rescued earlier today. >> it's bad. about 5 foot of water you can't come through with a car. same thing further down the road. this flood is bad. >> just down the road, power was restored. we saw

now, let's bring in leland vittert up the coast in atlantic beach. leland? >> chris, florence roared ashore here thursday morning and the heavy rain has not stopped since. many of the hardest hit areas we can't even get to. behind me is the crow's nest marina, so many of the charter fishermen and shrimpers who work these waters race to pull their boats out of the water to protect them, only to have them destroyed on land. not only are so many homes here flooded or levelled, but florence took people's ability to make a living, and the channels and estuaries farther east, locals tell me there are still a lot of residents who chose to ride out the storm and are now cut off. the rescue business right after this storm is a dangerous one. we're right now just in the channels, and you can see all of the boats that were trashed here, believe it or not, people actually tried to ride the storm out on a couple of these boats. now, we are out looking for them. the coast guard has been overwhelmed by the number of calls. we have seen their helicopters circling above here
