now i am with kate clarke lemay. so what is going on here? >> it is nice to meet you. this is a picture of queen lili'uokalani. the queen was the last reigning monarch of hawaii. she is pictured here in a a large grand manner classical portrait. very neoclassical styling from the way in which the curtain and braces the side of the picture plane and is drawn back to reveal this picturesque landscape in the background. it is a full-size portrait and she is looking at us with this stately command of power as a female head of state. the hawaiian constitution from 1852 outlined that the hawaiian people would be ruled through a constitutional monarchy so they elected their rulers. her brother died in 1891 and the queen came into the hawaiian throne at a very troubled moment at which anglo businessmen who had settled in hawaii since the 1820s had built up so much power that they were starting to take over the political landscape. so, the queen knew that she needed to communicate her power in such a way that they would understand that she was the sovereign ruler of the hawaiia
