len. >> reporter: that's right, dana. just within the last hour or so, here in san jose, the suspect in this case has been booked into santa clara county main jail. we have exclusive video of the suspect after he was arrested and questioned by university police being escorted in jail. he is identified as 21-year-old michael escobar a san jose state university student. he was arrested off campus by university police around noon today for allegedly sneaking into the joe west dorm and groping four female students as they slept. he apparently slipped into the rooms of residents who left the doors unlocked. but surveillance video and witness statements led to his identification and capture. some students say the fact that the suspect is a student makes -- seems to make a bad situation even worse. >> a stranger is one thing. if you would have a student, you trust people here on campus and kind of almost like a family and then to have that happen is just -- it's wrong. >> reporter: escobar will likely face sexual assault charges

len ramirez with more on this dangerous rescue mission.en. >> reporter: well, allen, investigators are still on the scene of this fatal officer- involved shooting of a kidnapping suspect. it happened at about 1:00 this afternoon. police say when they confronted the suspect, he was with the victim inside the apartment. police say they were trying to negotiate some sort of release, a safe release of the victim. but that's not the way it ended up. shots started flying instead. police investigators huddled up in front of the san jose apartment just minutes after the deadly shootout. officers had tracked down kidnapping suspect tri truong le to the complex on pistachio drive and found him holding the 11-year-old girl inside. >> as they are making the approach appeared in a window with the victim holding her as a hostage armed with a handgun. the suspect opened fire on the officers as they approached the apartment. he fired several rounds from inside the apartment. >> reporter: police say a specially trained hostage rescue team entered the apart

len ramirez on how california is gearing up for what could be a catastrophic fire season. len. >> reporter: they have just stayed geared up from last fire season which they say really never ended. all around the bay area, the fire season normally ends by late october, early november. but here we are in the middle of january and the brush is still very, very dry as those folks in mountain view found out last night one spark and this stuff goes up pretty easy. >>> reporter: when live high voltage wires came down on mountain view last night, no one was surprised that it could spark a fire. what no one expected was the size and intensity of the flames. >> i got about 30 feet close to the fire and didn't feel much heat so it wasn't too extreme but it was intense. >> reporter: two acres of brush under the lines lit up the sky before fire crews brought the flames under control. one neighbor in an adjacent trailer park was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. >> could you see the flames from our porch. >> reporter: alice took pictures of the june type fire in the middle of january.

len. >> reporter: that's right. it has been quite a day here in south san jose. things are now getting back to normal after a bank robbery, bomb scare, a red alert here at gunderson high school and as you mentioned, even some citizen heroics. >>> reporter: for several hours the lanes of highway 85 in south san jose were empty. police closed off the freeway in both directions and sent a bomb-detecting robot to a crash vehicle allegedly used in a bank robbery to look for explosives. it all started when two men told tellers they had a bomb and robbed the bank of america at snell and blossom hill at about 11:30 a.m. >> one suspect waited outside as a getaway driver. the second suspect entered the bank with a device. we don't have information on the device but suffice to say the threat was that it would blow up. >> reporter: the robbers got away with an unknown amount of cash. while some officers responded to the bank, others covered freeway ramps to head off the robbers. minutes later came reports of a crash of what turned out to be the getaway car on the northbound
