and len ramirez has been closely watching this case. he joins us live from san jose's federal courthouse with more on today's testimony. >> reporter: for the first time during this trial, we got tearful testimony from the witness stand. it came from a former top scientist for theranos, who said that she had to resign , could no longer work for elizabeth holmes because holmes was about to launch a product she knew was unreliable. surekha gangakhedkar was one of the first 25 people hired at theranos in 2005. she was a senior scientist and manager of a team developing blood test for the edison many analyzers, and she reported directly to elizabeth holmes. she said employees worked in silos, or unhappy and stressed. she said problems came to a head when theranos was launching new versions of their machines for walgreens and a secret new client. i don't think the devices were ready to use on patient samples, she told the jury. she said she brought her concerns to elizabeth holmes, but holmes told her she had made promises and, quote, had no
