let's talk about this with elizabeth cohen, our senior med medical correspondent, and lena nguyen.ty big announcement here regarding the money for schools to expand testing. recognizing, they say, this will be new to schools knowing how they are going to proceed with a testing program. how important is that to getting kids back into the classroom and to convincing parents that it's safe to send their kids back into the classroom? >> well it's very important. throughout the trump administration we heard people saying if we could test kids it wouldn't solve everything, you could still have outbreaks in schools but it would go a long way to helping tamp down outbreaks in schools and help keep kids healthy. it's a tough endeavor. there are a lot of schools all over the united states, and there's no one centralized authority here, and some of these schools have more resources than others but if they can really get a good testing program going for schools, that really could be quite -- quite -- make quite a difference in keeping outbreaks out of schools and keeping kids healthy. >> docto

lena wen, what do you think we have another widespread surge?, chris, i believe we are on the cusp of that fourth surge we have been dreading. you mentioned 15 states or so have seen an increase in the number of infections. we are increasing a higher baseline of infections and we have the variable that we now have these more transmissible variants being dominant in the u.s. very quickly. all is across the backdrop of states lifting restriction, especially mandates, so i think we are going to see a surge in the number of infections. i think what helps this time though is the most vulnerable, particularly nursing home residents, people that are older are vaccinated. so we may prevent a spike in hospitalizations and deaths. we will see an increase in infections as the vaccine rollout is speeding up. >> because again the vaccine, the surge doesn't matter as much, that's what people are saying? >> well, this is a concern. i really think what is happening in europe with lockdowns and restrictions, that's not going to happen here. there are so many gov

lena nguyen is here to talk about this. how encouraged are you about the numbers we are hearing dr.out? >> very encouraged. the journal came out with studies yesterday and they were looking at a hospital setting where they tested the individuals who were fully vaccinated, the health care workers fully vaccinated, and it answers one of the key questions we had, which is do vaccines protection from infections of all kind including the asymptomatic infections, and they found a decrease and it's encouraging news and just adds to all of the information we have that vaccines protect you and very importantly it now shows that it protects other people from you because it protects you from getting infected and transmitting it to others, too. >> i want to talk about a report out from the hhs inspector general, and it's important. they found medical staff are burned out, that many are suffering from ptsd, and there has been a higher than normal turnover rate, and public trust in hospitals also eroded. what needs to be done here? i wonder looking at this, i mean, it sounds a lot like this exten

lena when.ce from the cdc that recommended 3 feet of distance instead of 6 feet in certain circumstances as long as everyone is wearing a mask. is that data backed up by the science? >> i think this guidance is the right thing to do because of how essential in-person schooling is. i think that should be the end goal, that we know that young children especially are really hurting from not being back in school, so in order to do so we have to cut the 6 foot distance to 3 feet. i also think there's nothing that is zero risk, but this is probably pretty low risk based on the studies that we have. there's one thing i wish the cdc did, which is to say if we are cutting that distance from 6 feet to 3 feet, what additional layers of mitigation are we going to be implementing. absolutely mask wearing should be enforced, but what about improved ventilation and t testing. i fear that otherwise school districts are going to skimp further. there are already a lot of schools that are at 3 feet distancing. wit
