lenny, i want to go to you. when's the timing here in terms of sort of setting up the perimeter and trying to clear everything that the perimeter is around? does it go to the night fall? through the night? what do we look at in that trying to figure out how far they may have gotten? >> we -- absolutely, luke. this is certainly going to go around the clock until they're in custody. i mean, the terrain is very rough, tough on law enforcement. also tough on these three suspects. i mean, they got to get through the rough terrain, try to run, hide, escape. not if they're in a vehicle, on foot. you know, they're human instincts turn into animal instincts. desperate people do desperate things. they're armed with the officer's handgun. not sure if he was shot or how he was killed. these are questions that have i'm sure law enforcement has answers to but, you know, it's a full-court press until these three are in custody and i'm hoping they they have cooperators, maybe witnesses or somebody stepped up and knew the three

lenny. >> reporter: well, one of those plans will be announced later. but right now, protestor have been out here all day in front of the jail saying it's a crime scene time and time again. >> they are a vicious gang. >> reporter: family members of people locked up at the santa clara county main jail say the mistreatment of inmates has been going on for years. >> i told my son just comply, you know, and do the best you can. and don't get mouthy. >> reporter: they say it took the death of one inmate to finally focus on the problem. >> we want justice! >> reporter: family and community groups marched on the jail demanding reforms to prevent any other inmates from being killed in custody. >> we are come together as a group, a family and people, this is not okay. >> reporter: 31-year-old michael james tyree was found dead in his cell last week the coroner saying he had blunt- force trauma injuries that caused him to bleed to death internally. three correctional deputies, matthew farris, jereh lubin and rafael rodriguez were arrested on suspicion of murder.

. >> leonardis agreed to be interviewed only in the presence of his attorney, lenny basile. >> what kindacing with these charges? >> i'd rather address that. his case is not indicted yet. it's purely under investigation by the prosecutor's office. the legal process hasn't gone forward with the normal speed due to the injuries. >> why did you take this case, vinnie? it's going to be a tough case. >> i've had many difficult cases through the years but there was something about it. i knew he was a troubled young man, had not led an exemplary life but i know his family. he's a fortunate young man for a wonderful family. there was never a question to as to whether to take the case or not, as difficult as it may be. >> i'm grateful i have the best lawyer in the state of new jersey. >> it could be months or years before leonardis' case is resolved in court. but now deanna collins enters her courtroom with high hopes. she says her lawyer has gotten her a favorable plea deal on charges of fraudulently acquiring prescription drugs from pharmacies. the other charges against her will be dropped. it'

lenny. >> reporter: well, ken, if you are talking about the closest downtown area to super bowl 50, you'reng about downtown san jose. and officials here have been quietly working for months to try to get some of the big events of super bowl week and they have them. san francisco is the official host city and santa clara has the game. but san jose won't be sitting on the sidelines of super bowl 50. >> we are certainly happy to allow those other cities to enjoy traffic. we are going to have a lot of fun down here in san jose. >> reporter: mayor sam liccardo said san jose is in a good position to intercept much of the super bowl vibe starting with team arrivals. the nfc and afc champions and their families plus most of the corporate sponsors will fly into mineta international airport, not sfo. san jose has more reliable weather and levi's stadium is so close, you can see it from the runways. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: practicing all week at san jose state. >> that's going to attract a lot of that city's fans and so you're going to have this buzz around this city that's going to be following t

lenny. >> reporter: well, that's right, ken. some of the evidence includes video evidence not of the actual beating because that allegedly took place in the cell and there's no camera coverage in those cells but of the common areas and the events leading up to the beating. i'm also told that there are multiple independent recorded voice accounts of what happened from some of the inmates in the area about what they saw and what they heard and what they reported to their own family members on telephone calls that were made after the event as you may know, all of those telephone calls being recorded by the jail itself. so this evidence put together shows what may have happened in the events leading up and afterwards of this in-custody killing. >> i want to express my profound sorrow over the loss -- >> reporter: the sometimes emotional news conference, the sheriff conveyed condolences to the family of inmate michael james tyree and condemned what she called a violent and cowardly act by three correctional deputies. matthew farris,
