leo villareal artist >> the sequencing is inspired by all the kinetic activity found around the bridge. the movement of water, traffic and atmospherebut, those are loose inspirations. i take that and use my custom software to create the sequences. >> jeff :the lights are being taken down to do some important maintenance on the vertical load supporting cables and will be replaced with more durable leds and electrical equipment. ben davis project manager the bay area is a hotbed of innovation and learning and we have learned a lot about electronics in the harsh environment of the san francisco bayso, what's going to happen at the end of our two year permitted run, the existing lights will come down and caltrans will get up and maintain the bridge to a new and higher standard and then we will install some new and robust leds that have been custom made for the harsh conditions of the san francisco bay and we think those will perform well over the long haul in the hands of caltrans. >> jeff :people sure do love the project and they do say thatthe lights will be back up and running in time f

i don't know if you see it, but they are slowly disappearing before the sun comes up, and leo villareal, and you got these up here two years ago, and what does it feel like when all of these people are coming out when they could be home in their beds? >> well, i am humbled with gratitude, and excited to have a piece like this for two years, and unique and the way it is embraced by the public is remarkable. >> reporter: surprised? >> well, i nknow that i love th piece and believed in it, but to see the response, yes, it is overwhelming and amazing. >> reporter: and today, it is going to be shutdown, because caltrans has to do maintenance on the bridge, but the plan is to bring it back for the super bowl and make it semi permanent? >> well, it is a piece of intra structure that hundreds of thousands of people use everyday, and that is always part of the deal, and so we are thrilled to bring it back in about 11 months. >> reporter: you had to get up private fund, and you had got up $4 million. and was it a struggle? >> well, the first time we had to get up to $8 million, and those were bra

leo villareal, what was the inspace station behind the project. i was asked to think of the bridge as a canvas and what would we do? i proposed 25,000 l.e.d. lights and the suspender cables of the bridge. >> reporter: it was up to the viewer to see what they will in it? >> it's all abstract. it's, you know, there are no images, no text. it's open-ended. it's refreshing for viewers. >> reporter: it was supposed to be temporary but it's been up nor two years. everybody loved it so much it's now going to be permanent once it returns next year. what does that mean to you? how does that feel? >> it's very humbling. it's overwhelming. the joy this brought to people's lives. everybody wants to tell me their experience with the bay lights. so it's amazing that it can remain. >> reporter: what was it like for you as you saw the lights fading this morning? >> definitely bittersweet. it's something that, you know, people love so much. and i certainly love. and -- but, you know, they will be back in about 11 months. >> reporter: all right. absolutely. leo vil
