joining us now the former defense secretary, director leon panetta. thank you so much for joining us. >> it's nice to be with you, wolf. >> all right. so let's talk about two former presidents, a former president, a former secretary of state, a former attorney general, a former cia director, two sitting congress woman. they are among the people who have been targeted in this terror plot. have you ever seen an attempted attack on this scale? >> i don't think there is any question but that as the law enforcement officials have said, this is a terrorist attack on the united states. we don't know where it's coming from. we don't know who's responsible. but when you have ten bombs that are distributed across this country that constitutes a terrorist attack on our country. and we have to do everything necessary to make sure that we find out who is responsible and take steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again. >> how seriously, mr. secretary, should the american people take this current threat? >> i think the american people are smart enough to take this

"outfront" now, leon panetta. secretary panetta, always good to see you. you heard jamie's reporting, a source familiar with the meeting saying that pompeo told mbs in no uncertain terms he has to own the situation, have to get the investigation done quickly and if they don't do it, the u.s. will have to deal with this. i guess my first question for you is, do you buy that behind the scenes, pompeo conveyed this to the saudis? >> well, i think that secretary pompeo probably did present a very firm message to the saudis. you know, i know mike pompeo from his work at the cia, and you know, i found him to be a pretty direct guy when it comes to getting to the issues, and i think he recognizes that the whole world is watching right now, and the saudis have a clear responsibility to present the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth to the world as to what happened to mr. khashoggi. >> so, explain to -- i understand that diplomacy and what goes on behind closed doors is very different than what goes on in front of the cameras, but why would pompeo be

joining us to discuss the political and policy implications, leon panetta, and copacabana beach's chiefitical analyst gloria borger. >> the notion that president trump knows more about nato than secretary mattis, i'm wondering what you know about that? is that something that should concern people, that the president thinks that? >> well, as we've found out about this president, he knows more about everything more than anybody else so it doesn't surprise me that he would say he knows more about nato than jim mattis. it's just -- it's just one of those exaggerated statements that i think the public has adjusted to from this president. >> gloria, why do you think the president calls secretary mattis sort of a democrat or said he was sort of a democrat in the "60 minutes" interview? >> he went from mad dog to reports now that he calls him democratic dog and it's really not surprising, anderson. they disagree on so much. when you think about the south korea war games, they disagreed on the president stopping those, the demand, the space for it, nato, the paris climate deal. i think there hav

a ban then defense secretary leon panetta finally reversed in 2018. m.j. hager joins me now. thank you so much. >> thanks for having me. >> tell me about, first of all, this growing group of women running for office. women and women veterans. what do you think the significance is of that? >> i'm really excited to see a wave of veterans and especially women veterans running on both sides of the aisle. i think part of it is because maybe there are traditionally barriers to women running, whether that's, you know, this hess tense to try to take on the good old boy's club. women's veterans have already worked for decades in male dominated fields. i never thought of myself as a female pilot, i was just a pilot. it's not easy to intimidate us. we've already kind of proven our mettle. >> speaking of mettles, to someone who was three tours of duty in afghanistan shot down while, you know, fighting the taliban. you're hardly a pushover. so politics should be easy for you. still, politics is tough for democrats in texas. especially women. >> i think there's a real hunger for, you know,
