one of the most important things to remember here is picking up on what leon panetta said.st al qaeda might have a safe haven if the taliban assume full control of afghanistan. al qaeda has been working with the taliban. al qaeda is linked to the taliban. they share leadership and operations, some of the taliban prisoners that were released as a result of the february 2020 deal that the u.s. struck with the taliban were, in fact, al qaeda. i think it is a mistake to say we could be going back to a point where al qaeda can reestablish a safe haven. al qaeda has been operating in afghanistan for a long time. i think the fact that the biden administration has so cavalierly dismissed that and are now making threats against the taliban if they provide a safe haven for al qaeda suggests they don't understand what's going on on the ground at all. >> bill: jessica we've seen pretty horrific images already today of women and kids in the street bleeding. obviously victims of some level of violence leveled by the taliban. this could be just the beginning of it. who knows what's happen

leon panetta has been outspoken and critical. this yesterday about the high possibility or probability in his words that we are going back into afghanistan. watch. >> we'll have to go back in to get isis. we'll probably have to go back in when al qaeda rest rekts itself. -- resurrects itself. we can leave a battlefield but we can't leave the war on terrorism. >> bill: the comment yesterday on cnn. the isis-k group is a splinter group described as 100 or 200 men living in different parts of eastern afghanistan. all right, to me that sounds devious. years ago there was a bomb in a soda can and put it on an airplane and it blew up. who knows what schemes they're planning now? i think panetta is exactly right. >> i think so, too. i would worry about the numbers. when president obama pulled out of iraq, he said well, you know, there are just a few hundred of these isis guys and then had to go back in. panetta, who remember is a democrat who served as secretary of state and c.i.a. director, i think he is absolutely right. president bid

even obama's defense secretary, even former cia director, he did both jobs, leon panetta rightly is calling for a swift military response. i don't agree with him politically but he know what's he's talking about here. this morning joe biden himself could note be bothered to answer any other questions about afghanistan. especially after and in light of yesterday's disaster. not even they told me to call on whoever being dictated by his staff. he doesn't want them to get mad at him. obviously they call the shots. take a look. >> i met with my commanders this morning first thing in the morning. got a detailed briefing about yesterday's attacks and the measures they're taking to protect our forces and complete the mission. and we mr. complete the mission. i'm not going to take any questions because of the prime minister being here on afghanistan now. i'll be available at another time. >> sean: i'm not going to take questions. i might get yelled at again. what will happen to americans clearly now? it's inevitable. we'll leave them behind. how will they ever get out? what are we doing to protect

tom: leon panetta on cnn goes the other way and says this will extend our stay. a point of discussion this morning? annmarie: we do know the president had directed the departing of defense and the state department to drop contingency plans, but we heard -- to draft contingency plans, but we heard he is not extending that deadline. right after that, there is a briefing with his press secretary press psaki -- press secretary jen psaki, and she said that because of isis-k, that is who they assessed conducted suicide bombing yesterday, that is the reason why they must get out as soon physically possible. lisa: what is sentiment like among military commanders right now? annmarie: it is a bit mixed. some saying they should get out as soon as possible because of what we had yesterday, and of courts -- and of course, the tragedy of the 13 servicemembers who were there in a humanitarian effort to make sure they could evacuate american citizens and afghan allies. others, many say we should have stayed in afghanistan for years to come. it was a security force in the region.
