yesterday oakland mayor sheng thao fired chief leronne armstrong, who she suspended in january after an independent report found he allegedly mishandled cases of officer miskwukt. in a short statement after mayor sheng thao publicly announced his removal, armstrong, "i am deeply disappointed in the mayor's decision. i committed no misconduct and my termination is fundamentally wrong, unjustified, and unfair." he expects to release more details as he processes the fact that he's out of a job. a city council member called his removal plain wrong and is worried about how much this will cost the city if armstrong decides to sue. a civil rights attorney who has been working to get the oakland police department out from under two decades of federal oversight thought armstrong was moving the department in a direction that would see a way out from that oversight sometime this year. >> i'm disappointed because i didn't think there was sufficient evidence to justify termination -- terminating the chief under the circumstances. >> this is a police chief that has been part of a dysfunctional and
