i'm a "lifelong lesbian."rushes on little girls and female teachers when i was very young, kindergarten age-- five, six years old. people who have been working in the field of gender preference have told us for now 30, 40 years that there isn't just a dichotomy between homosexual and heterosexual. there's a continuum in a lot of people, somewhere between those two extremes. i appear to have been heterosexual for a period. i dated and enjoyed the company of boyfriends a lot. those sort of sexual feelings i had then were strictly male-centered-- or young boy-centered-- and seemed very, very normal. senate in massachusetts, he pledged that he would be better on equal rights for gays and lesbians thannd if you recall during that race, he was also pro-choice which he has flipped his opinion on. look, this is a very difficult issue for him, but it's an issue i would say, anderson, on all the social issues, it's the one at which he has been the most consistent, because he has always said that he is opposed to gay marriage, even when the state of massachusetts approved gay marriage in 2003, when he was governor, he said you know what, we don't want to become san francisco. so at least on this social issue, he has been more consistent. when i asked him, for example, about flip-flopping on abortion and how he's changed his position on that, his answer was well, president obama has changed his position on gay marriage. so again, you know, this is at least one area he's been consistent, but he also doesn't like to talk about social issues very much. it's not his comfort level. he likes to talk about the economy. he wants to make this race about the economy and of course, he doesn't want to

the role of the government is to create an even playing field and that is not the same for gay and lesbianmericans because they do not have the same freedom. for me it's about correcting a philosophical inconsistentsy and the promise for what it means tore conservative. >> the leaders argue the party needs to be more flexible on marriage equality to appeal to younger votersism the party is changing and younger people we are young conservatives for the freedom to marry self identified conservatives under the age of 44 overwhelmingly agree with the freedom to marry. they believe it's something that should happen for people. so the demographics within the republican party are shifting. >> i think the country is changing on this social issue than any other social issue. and what you see here in terms of our group is a manifestation of that change within the context of the republican party and the conservative movement. and i don't think just because rick santorum and i disagree about the issue means that either of us is less conservativement it is an opening to begin to have a conversation abo

have a special obligation to teach fellow conservatives and right of center voters why a gay and lesbian americans deserve the same rights as everybody else. the second main theme of my book is that because of this constant constant over-the-top rhetoric that we often hear from the religious right most people have little understanding of what rank-and-file republicans actually believe about gay issues. and i think the conventional wisdom is that all republicans hate gays and they are opposed to and nothing could be further from the truth. what i discovered in research and polling data on this topic is that there is in fact a huge disconnect between the conventional wisdom that i just mentioned and the reality that there will majority of rank-and-file republicans actually believe and support, believe it and supports gay rights. the reality is this. majority of rank-and-file republicans supports nearly all of the major planks in that quote gay agenda unquote that i mentioned and i think that is one of the most interesting and important parts of this book. that is the message that needs to
