i'm lester holt sitting in tonight for brian. it would seem to be the justice system itself on trial in the aftermath of yesterday's grand jury decision in new york to not indict a policeman in the choking death of eric garner during his arrest. on the heels of an identical decision to the ferguson, missouri, shooting of michael brown, emotions are running high. we can show you the picture from just a short time ago in lower manhattan as crowds once again fill the streets. emotions are running high on both sides, those who believe the system was all but rigged to fail and those who think it worked exactly the way it was intended. tonight we're learning about what the grand jury in the garner case had to work with to reach its decision. and while there's been no evidence in either case that the use of force by police was racially motivated, calls for racial justice grew louder today as the u.s. department of justice launched its own investigation into the garner case. we have it all covered tonight. we start here in new york where

i'm lester holt sitting in tonight for brian. there's such deep anguish for families of those aboard airasia flight 8501. debris and even bodies of some of the victims themselves retrieved from the java sea today left little doubt about the fate of the plane and the 162 people on board. a blue suitcase, an oxygen tank, what appears to be an undeployed emergency slide are some of the items officials have now confirmed came from the jet. the debris from the airbus was discovered off the west coast of borneo, roughly in line with the plane's flight path from surabaya to singapore. with help of the united states standing by to help find and recover the jet's flight recorders, early indications suggest the flight met a sudden end as the crew tried to negotiate around violent thunderstorm cells in their path. once again tonight we're covering several angles of this story. let's start with katy tur in singapore with the latest on the search. katy? >> reporter: lester, it is now day four of this search and rescue. they're going to be loo

i'm lester holt sitting in for brian. the man heading the search for airasia flight 8501 today said what many of us have been thinking that the plane is likely at the bottom of the sea. it's been roughly 48 hours since the airbus jet with 162 people onboard vanished from radar about halfway along its two-hour flight from surabaya indonesia, to singapore. the pilots were trying to avoid thunderstorms around the time contact was lost. indonesian authorities admit they don't have a capability to conduct an extensive undersea search and have asked the united states for help. a pentagon spokesman says details of assistance are being worked out. we're covering several angles of this story. we begin in singapore with nbc's katy tur. katy, what's the latest on the search? >> reporter: hi there, lester. it is morning here in singapore. the start of day three with still no sign of this plane. the search has resumed for the morning, but there are concerns that bad weather could interfere with the effort. ships, helicopters and plane

. >>> this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt, substituting tonight carl quintanilla. >>> good evening. we begin with some breaking news. two new york police officers are dead tonight after an armed man walked up to their patrol car and opened fire in brooklyn. the man ran into a nearby subway station and committed suicide. it's the first shooting death of an nypd officer in three years. and while the gunman's motives aren't clear, the shooting comes after weeks of protests over fatal police encounters. we begin tonight with nbc's anne thompson. >> reporter: it was a brazen attack. two new york city police officers gunned down in broad daylight, sitting in their patrol car. an execution style shooting in the brooklyn neighborhood of bedford stuyvesant. authorities say at least one officer was shot in the head. ambulance workers rushed the two policemen to a nearby hospital. it was not enough. both officers died. the suspect police say ran into the subway and shot himself. emergency workers tried unsuccessfully to revive him. at the scene, the shock and despair visible on the responding
