lester holt joins us now with more on this fascinating report. lester, thank you for doing this. decide to? >> i've done a lot of stories on criminal justice reform and wrongful convictions over the years and one of the producers i work with on this, you know, had talked to some of the "dateline" leadership and how do we up this to something bigger and came up with the idea. it's not the first thing you'd say yes to the idea of being locked up in a maximum security prison but it made sense because it is a story we've told from the outside. it was time to go inside. mass incarceration is very complicated. a lot of people frankly belong there. but there are real questions, you know, can we lower this incarceration rate? why do we lock up more people than any country on earth? is prison supposed to be a place of punishment or is it a place of rehabilitation? and then you add the emotion of people in it. of course there are real victims here, you know, these guys took lives in many cases. we hear in the "dateline" hour from family members who lost people and the convicted people are
