donald trump at this time was going on letterman and more of a celebrity.ack then, mike pence was sounding the sort of anti-or the populist anti-washington flavor. he was attacking the media for some of the very things that we've seen donald trump do as he is run for president. the one thing that jumped out at me, a clip where mike pence is really against the indianapolis star, the local newspaper for its coverage of the indianapolis 500 that was coming up that memorial day weekend. one of the things that mike pence harped on was the number of people the indianapolis star said were at the preliminary race events, the carburetion day -- a last raise practice race before the event. i think the paper reported there were 15,000 people. mike pence was, where did they get that number? he had been there is a reporter with his own press pass and he said he is in several -- 10 thousands more people. he was upset about a picture of the newspaper that showed an empty sausage and peppers steak stand. he said, i was there and i saw much larger line. the same kind of thi

let's turn to josh letterman now, associated press white house reporter. how's this all playing at the white house? >> reporter: the white house, shep-s pretty gleeful about this. they're seeing this as quite the endorsement of the speech that michelle obama gave almost eight years ago. the white house has been really careful, though, not to comment on the actual plagiarism charge. you know the first rule in politics is when your opponent is driving off a cliff you don't want to get in their way. so they're really reluctant to give the trump campaign an excuse to say oh, this is democrats trying to make hay out of nothing, we've already seen the trump campaign trying to blame hillary clinton and say that because hillary clinton attacks women that somehow led to this. you see both the clinton campaign, democrats more generally, and the white house trying to say yes, michelle obama gave a great speech but not really weighing in on the specific charge of plagiarism. >> shawn spicer's going to be on with us in just a few minutes, and of course i'm going to ask
