this is levi west, the director of terrorism studies at charles stewart university. levi, one key question that comes to mind is what i just asked the joneses here, about the threat of white nationalist terrorism. in your opinion, is that a form of violence and ideology that is growing around the world? or is this a one-off? >> very much the former. there's very little question that there's been a substantial rise across the western world in far-right white supremacist, white nationalist extremism, particularly since the beginnings of the trump campaign around 2014-15. the statistics back that up. in 2018, the only people who died in the united states from terrorist attacks died at the hands of right-wing terrorists. in europe there has been consistent and sustained -- >> go ahead. >> in australia we've seen a rise, a substantial rise, in certainly right-wing extremism and from an australian perspective the perpetrator of the events in new zealand was an australian. >> what is driving this ideology? >> the ideology itself has been around for a long time. underpinning

. >>> joining us now is clarissa word, levi west, and juliet kiam, former assistant secretary of homeland security and national security analyst. clarissa, we want to start with you. obviously you have done long investigative pieces and specials on extremism throughout europe and beyond. and so what is the status of this right-wing extremism? >> it's clear this is a growing problem not just in the u.s., europe, but across much of the world. we've spent the morning combing through this 87-page rant, manifesto, whatever you would call it. it's very difficult, i think, to know how much of this is sincere, how much of it is intended to sort of throw up smoke screens, how much of it is intended to be deliberately provocative. but the kind of language you hear here, this man saying he was inspired by the right wing nationalist who killed more than 70 people in norway. he also lists dyllan roof who killed nine worshippers in a church in the u.s. and he's driven by this idea, you heard john talking about it, islam is the enemy, muslims are the enemy, they are reproducing at a faster rate than we

joining us now is our clarissa ward, cnn chief international correspondent, levi west, director of terrorism studies, and arhana. i want to start with a crime against civilization, but this it is specifically targeted at muslims. i just don't know how muslims are supposed to absorb that this morning. what are the conversations that the community's having? >> it has been a very difficult last 12 hours or so as i heard about this news and absorbing it, started reaching out to my friends, my colleagues, and just what i'm seeing even on social media. this is just heartbreaking and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time. i think the common theme i'm hearing is that unfortunately it is not surprising. the american muslim community has experienced horrific attacks motivated by people who are inspired by white nationalist causes, whether it's attacks on our mosques, attempts to attack our communities, so this has been going on for some time. i think the question that i'm really sitting with this morning, alisyn, is this should be a wakeup call. the attack in new
