levin. mr. levin: thank you, mr. speaker. i'll utilize such time as i now take. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman is recognized. are evin: what republicans in essence trying to do here and elsewhere, if i might say so today, is to soften their image. but they can't run away from the hard reality that at every turn over the last several years, they've sought to pass laws making life more difficult for middle and low income families. on the republican chopping block, unemployment insurance blocked for three million americans. food assistance for low--- low income americans would be cut y nearly 20% in the ryan -republican budget. a minimum wage increase hasn't occurred in five years. yet republicans refuse to provide an increase. medical assistance for americans would be slashed by the ryan-republican budget. with funding for medicaid and the children's health insurance program cut to the tune of 26% within 10 years. social service block grants, which provide flexible funds for states to help vulnerable populations, eliminated under the ryan-republican budget.

i would adopt one of 11 bills and sandy levin will probably be angry with me that i would adopt the carl levin version, the one that has an expiration in it because if you can stop these things for a while you can buy time to fix the system. if you sit around and say well in a few years we will do this and we will be fine, by then the patient will have lost so much blood it's going to be very hard to do anything where mali revenue-neutral and tax reform. the other complaint i have heard endlessly is oh it's so unfair to make this may 8 which is the date of the 11 transaction which also i believe happens to be the date that senator wyden published his op-ed in "the wall street journal" which messed me up because he wrote what i was going to write so i was furious but i came here anyway. so the may 8 deadline was known.
