wendy saltzman live now in levittown to explain what is going on here. wendy? >> reporter: monica, this campus here in levitt stoun serves around 300 students but today it was like a ghost town. like other locations, the doors were locked and students are being turned away. 35,000 itt technical students woke up to find their school was shut down with few answers. >> i found out today on the internet and was in shock. so i had to come down here just to make sure that it was really closed. >> reporter: there was not a single person inside itt's levittown branch. >> it was a good school, you know, but i -- honestly, i didn't learn -- i didn't learn anything. >> reporter: the abrupt closure followed an announcement the school would not receive an estimated $580 million in federal student aid. the department of education has been investigating itt since 2004. the for-profit school has also been the subject of 19 states attorney civil actions facing allegations they preyed on students with federal aid requesting some take out additional private loans. they were also
