our report tonight from nbc's george lewis. >> reporter: tonight, there are protests in the streets of oakland over the judge's ruling. a ruling that many see as too lenient given the fact that a man was killed. >> i believe it's a racist criminal justice system. >> reporter: 22-year-old oscar grant was an unruly but unarmed train passenger. in 2009, he was detained by police after a fight. the incident, recorded from different angles by people with cell phones. officer johanas pulled his pistol and fired. grant died several hours later in a hospital, leaving behind his fiance and 4-year-old daughter. mehserle was put on trial for murder, but in july a jury in los angeles found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. he could have received a maximum of 14 years in prison. but instead the judge sentenced him to two years with credit for time already served. that means mehserle could be out in seven to eight months. >> it is still my hope that people will express their anger in a manner that is nonviolent. >> reporter: and tonight, the oakland police are trying to keep the violence to a

nbc's george lewis is long beach, california, tonight with the latest on these rescue efforts. george, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. when the ship's splendor left here, the home port of long beach it had 4500 people on board including 3299 passengers. now the ship has to be towed to mexico. dead in the water. the splendor, huge, 950 feet long, weighing 113,000 tons. it sailed from long beach on sunday and then, 6:00 yesterday, fire broke out in an engine room as the splendor was about 200 miles south-southwest of san diego. the fire was put out with no injuries to the crew or passengers. but the ship was left without power, running water or working toilets. phone communication was cut off. in san diego, u.s. navy crews loaded eight planes with food and other supplies for the stranded ship. they'll be flown to the aircraft carrier uss ronald reagan and then flown by helicopter to the splendor. >> the first plane that went out this morning had about 5500 pounds of bread, water, plates. >> reporter: included in the food, lots of spam, the canned not the e-mail ve
