this is john lewis standing with fellow activist jim. mr.ad been hit in the head with a wooden coca-cola crate. the other is feeling out what he has left for teeth. because even though the whole world knew the danger they were in, the police department in montgomery chose to do nothing. when that very easy to predict mob descended on the bus station in montgomery, the montgomery police did not show up. they did not try to prevent the violence. they did nothing. this weekend as part of this commemoration where they once again marched across the bridge in selma, with so much more weight on it than usual because of the voting rights act in the supreme court right now, something happened that surprised everyone. it happened in montgomery at a church service. it was the chief of police, the chief of montgomery's police department now is named kevin murphy. he had not yet been born when the freedom riders were attacked in his town. but he is the chief there now. and he says he grew up in alabama hearing the stories about how wrong it all was. well

i have to tell you, lewis loeven is the person that put all this together. he's worked months for this so i want to thank you publicly, lewis, for this. >> thank you. while the panelists are coming up i'd just like to tell you when general myat and i went down to brief secretary schultz a couple months ago, he invited admiral roughhead and secretary perry into the briefing we had a discussion about the whole program at fleet week. we talked about all the public events that went on but we also talked a lot and concentrated a lot on the senior leadership program and what the rest of disaster preparedness was about. in that conversation we started talking about the internationals a special agent of fleet week. secretary perry actually suggested that we extend invitations to people from around the world that they might benefit from the discussions that we're having. admiral roughhead suggested that his friends from chile had an experience down in their part of the world with an earthquake and thought it would be a good idea for us to hear about the operations th

john lewis, your response? >> justice scalia represents the minority view on the court. in fact, justice kennedy wrote the majority view, which is the law of the land with respect to this issue, and quite eloquently a conclusion of lawrence versus taxes, justice kennedy reticulated how the basic guarantees of freedom and equality contained in our constitution are stated as general propositions by the founders, by those who wrote the amendments to the bill of rights atause they recognize that -- as our nation evolves, later generations that come out of the 14th, and fifth amendment or drafted, the later generations will see the loss once thought necessary and appropriate only served to oppress. and that later generations will evoke these basic time-honored principles of the constitution and the liberty and equality for their generation and what is an ever-increasing notion of liberty and equality. i think that is exactly what is at issue with the freedom to marry. lesbian and gay people have been having a loving, committed relationships for centuries. it is the truth. but

so we made a phone call and we talked to lewis. and i gotta say, if there's one guy in this room that is the unsung hero of fleet week, it's lewis. he doesn't get a lot of recognition but he spends 16 hours a day this time of year working on fleet week and we went to him (applause) -- when we went to him with this admittedly somewhat crazy idea, we said, we want to partner with you and by that i mean i want you it raise some money. and he didn't even blink. he said, well, how much do you need and we calculated it out. really in the world of corporate america, not that much. in the world of government, even less. and he said, yeah, we can do that. let me make some phone calls. a couple of days later, he said, all right, i got a couple commitments. let's put a team together. it was myself, diana, lewis, val valesky, i'm sorry, it's been a long week already and some people from public works. we want a couple engineers, i'm an old medic, diana is really the logistics master and i figure if we're going to go someplace where thins might
