with every precinct reporting in, democratic state delegate linwood lewis holds a slim 22 vote lead over republican businessman wayne coleman. this contest is very important because it's one of two special elections that could determine which party controls the state senate because it is evenly divided between republicans and democrats now. democrats need to win this race and another special election january 21st in northern virginia to succeed attorney general elect mark herring to maintain the 20/20 split in the senate. as lieutenant governor democrat northrup would cast the tiebreaking vote. >>> a u.s. congressman who pleaded guilty to cocaine possession is back at work. florida republican trey radel is back at work. he said he'll work hard to earn back the trust of colleagues, constituents and family and said he's in a treatment program and while he was busted for drugs his biggest struggle is with alcohol. >>> the congressman is far from alone. a new report says 38 million americans drink too much. the cdc says excessive drinking can cause liver disease and lead to cancer and kill an estimated 88,000 americans a year.

coleman. the democrat is lynwood lewis. member of the house of delegates since 2004. this is incredibly close. 97% in. way, way, way too close to call. for a state senate seat, this has been a heated battle on a massively shortened timeframe. the two campaigns combined to spend over $1 million the last two months and way more than what's been spent in the district. it's the republicans trying to hold on to control of the senate as a whole and the democrats are trying to take it from them. we're going to keep you posted as results come in tonight. as it looks right now, this is way too close to call. less than 1%, it's going to be a recount. if the democrats pull this out and win this, they need to hold on to the other senate seat vacated by their candidate who won the attorney generals race in november, too. if democrats do that, too, in two weeks, if they hold on to the seat tonight and hold on to that other vacant seat in two weeks, then the democrats will control the virginia senate. it will be 50/50 and the democrats will have the tie breaking vote with the lieute
