auburn and lewistown are side by side, we are -- a river separates us. combined, our population is around 60,000. you cannot help but know people who know someone, so this will impact every corner of our community. >> are they saying, the witnesses tonight who are at the center, are they saying what happened in the bowling alley or the restaurant? >> they are. i am talking to a few of them. it is really -- again, it is almost discombobulated these pieces. a gentleman i just talked to playing corn hole goes, i heard a couple pops and another couple pops, but didn't think anything of it, it is halloween. then he started seeing everybody scream and move, and that was the piece of that evening for him and his sight, thankfully he was fine. so, we are happy for him. >> you must have others who are describing even seeing things up close, are you hearing from people who are eyewitnesses to those who were killed? >> yes, i am, but some of those things shouldn't be shared. >> it must be very traumatic, mayor, to think about how you began your day as the members o

that is out of, lewistown lives in bowden. so he's probably heading out of the county. reinstate police will oversee the effort. if, pianist federal and state and local police. all of the towns this guy might be on? >> close to canada, should the canadians be alerted right now? are they anticipating that would be expected? >> he's dumped a car, chances are he has stolen another one. somebody might not know that their car stolen. it's late at night, you might not know until the next morning. chances are he is. it's a high he's heading north. only because it is this part of maine, it is more rural. if you go north, if you go east headed towards massachusetts new york. probably doesn't want to do that. so the canadian border and u.s. border patrol have incredibly rigorous lockdown procedures in terms of manhunts. all boris of course we know that. but you have along the border, once again i know this area. well you have the main state police. if federal authorities. and i are probably going to get a canadian overlay on the other side. with the canadian please making sure. d

but what is the -- the warnings we are getting from law enforcement, for residents of lewistown, maine, to stay inside and lock their doors, what does that tell you about the gravity of the situation? >> it is a very active, chaotic situation, even for the police and commanders on the ground here, alex. they don't know if they have one shooter, who has traveled between locations, or there is multiple shooters involved. they have to sort that out. we have -- you have the image of the shooter. the tactical rifle, a big sign on it. it looks like he has maybe even some extra mags in these btu pants they are bulging out of the side. -- can cause devastation and death in proximity and the bowling alley, in a walmart distribution center. so, it's a very dire situation and everybody does need to stay sheltered in place, listen to the police, report anything. shots, sightings, anything. so they can get to this person and get to him quickly -- they've got to get him, quickly, and i isolate him and get to the threat. >> jim, the shooter, if this is indeed the shooter -- the image that we have up

lewistown is only about 40 miles north of portland. it only has about 36,000 people. the authorities have called on the folks in lewiston as well as auburn, about two miles away. so a neighboring town, to shelter in place as they look for this suspect and this mass casualty event. at least the third mass shooting this month. >> and as she points out, this is a small community. maine is not a very densely populated stated to begin with. from what i've gathered, lewiston only has about 79 sworn officers in that police department. if you are looking at a situation in which you have a shooting suspect at large with some kind of long-gone rifle. they don't know, it seems, where that is. what does that look like for a small police department? >> it looks like they'll kneel a lot of help but they it almost immediately after they understood the breadth of the situation. the maine state police began sending all of their helicopters, their units, their investigators, their crime scene people, as well as the county sheriff, all of their resources. as well as the other towns that

evening, a couple of shooting incidents acute -- occurred here and multiple casualties of the city of lewistownpolice are currently searching for a robert r. card, april 4th, 1983, of bowdoin. card is considered armed and dangerous. he's a person of interest however, and that's what we will label them as moving forward. until that changes. if people see him, they should not approach card or make contact with him in any way. the shelter in place order that currently stands in lewiston remains. a vehicle, when it was a vehicle of interest in this incident, was located in lisbon. and we are now asking residents in lisbon to shelter in place. >> well, mr. card, who were speaking about right now, is a person of interest in the person of interest only. i'm not listing him as a suspect at this point and we are not prepared to go into his background or anything else that we may be aware of. >> in addition to those killed, officials also say at least 50 people have been injured in the shooting and the resulting rush to escape the gunfire. let's go right to my colleague and easy -- on the ground for us i

joining me now john crisco's, anchor at tv in portland, maine, he has been reporting live from lewistownay. first, let me say how sorry i am that you and your community are going through this. and whenever you report on a terrible situation like this, and it's where you live as well, there are things that stick with you, stories that people tell you. what's yours today? when >> i think it really is the story, chris, of a man who was in the bowling alley where the shooting happened, and he was there, he loved double, he loved to-able with his wife. and he actually organized a lead for children, and that's what was happening there. there were children there bowling we. he was shot and killed by the. suspect he died trying to save the lives of the children who were in there in that bowling alley. the children he bought into the bowling alley. he organized this and was trying to save their lives. he died in that process. the people who i talk to who knew him talking about what a warm soul he was, what a generous person, how loving he was. and they can't imagine that this would happen to him.

that is the lewistown public school system announcing that all schools in all classes will be canceled tomorrow. obviously, that's a good call, given the fact that they still have not found this mass shooter yet. but a lot of questions going into this evening now, is that death count, unfortunately going to rise? and what what led up to this man somehow possessing this rifle? did he have this gun long before his mental health issues started arising? as recently as this summer, he was reportedly in a mental health facility for two weeks before he was released. so those questions will likely be answered by the atf eventually once they come on scene and once this guy is either in custody or taken down by law enforcement, what we often see with these mass shootings is once the atf is able to get the firearm the shooter used, they do what's called an emergency trace. and that's when they essentially do hyperspeed with their resources. and they're able to very quickly figure out where was this gun purchased, what was the chain of custody on it, or does it even have a serial number? is it pot
