in march of 1942, lexington and hornet, fletcher is on -- excuse me, lexington and yorktown. fletcher is on yorktown, wilson brown is on lexington and the two carriers together sail into the gulf while the japanese are making this assault against leigh and salahmala. what they do, relatively little known operation, they launch air takes on these beach heads and japanese transports and support ships off leigh. that does two things. the first is it gives the officers on both trips serious training. you have to fly over the stanley mountains, it gets a little dicey up there. they're facing aerial combat but also able to sink about three transports, a subchaser and other cargo vessels there. they get great flight operations and experience that particular way. the most important thing that raid does is convince the japanese, wow, we can't conduct these operations without adequate air cover. we will need our aircraft carriers and everything. what happens is that they go ahead and have their main carriers at that point in the indian ocean and they postpone the invasion of port mores
