leyla santiago has more from mexico city. >> reporter: dave and kaylee, we are learning more about the accident and survivors. we understand more than half of the 103 people on that aeromexico flight were from the united states. many are connecting here in mexico city. as we have spoken to them, they told us when they got on the flight, it was raining outside. there was wind and something, some wind gust is how they described it, brought the plane down. there was a dash to get off the plane and then they saw flames and smoke. many, all, we have spoken to say this was a miracle. now the investigation begins. the investigators have been able to recover the black boxes and say they are in good condition and they will be critical in getting a better understanding of the sequence of events and what led up to that plane coming down. even the ntsb has sent some investigators to look into it. in the meantime, many survivors are saying they are just lucky to be able to tell their stories. dave. kaylee. >> lucky indeed. >>> priceless royal artifacts stolen from the swedish cathedral in a daring

leyla, i understand the new numbers come from george washington university, a study out of there.else are you learning from that? >> i spent some time today speaking with those researchers, and one of the first things they made clear that this is actually a study regarding excess death. so they basically looked at exactly how many deaths they believe should have happened without hurricane maria, and this is the excess. but even more importantly, and i've talked to you about this before, john, they established some recommendations, ways that possibly in the future puerto rico could use this information to -- to prevent deaths in the future. they talked about lack of communication. they talked about only having protocols in place for a category 1 hurricane at the time. so some interesting things when it comes to what the challenges were and what recommendations or what protocols can be put in place to possibly prevent this in the future. but let me be clear again. this is the number they believe in excess deaths. this is not a list of nearly 3,000 cases. that has yet to be done. >>

it's remarkable leyla, what have you learned?> so many people feeling grateful having a sigh of relief after this accident that occurred yesterday. this was a flight from aeromexico, headed here to mexico city and government officials are now pointing the finger at a wind gust. that said, the investigation continues. they're still trying to get more information as to the sequence of events that led up to this. there were 103 people on board. people were injured, at least 49 people hospitalized, including children. also on the plane there were infants so rabbleable to know when you see the images of the plane that had billowing smoke and flames once it went down, remarkable, unbelievable to understand that everyone walked away and there were no deaths. there were injuries. the pilot and one other passengers are in critical but stable condition. i've spoke within the u.s. embassy in mexico and they tell me there were u.s. citizens on that plane. we understand that one of them was a reverend from the archdiocese of chicago, confirmi
