we really work across the full spectrum of the lgbt community's needs. we have very little data about the lgbt community. we are not fully counted in the census. there's very little hard data that's really known about the economic status about the lgbt community, where we live, and how we live. there's a myth of gay affluence, that we are a community of great affluence. the other myth is that in san francisco there are not problems with discrimination. i want to be clear that those are both myths. we largely reflecting world around us. we do face the civic pockets of marseillaise agent based on our lgbt -- pockets of marginal as asiaization. many lgbt folks moved here from other places of the country seeking sanctuary and a place to be ourselves. we came from places where we face significant challenges. i think some of the other challenges we face are discrimination and barriers, even in san francisco in terms of employment, housing, education, and many of the other systems that serve each of us as residents, employees, and folks who live in work in san

much more liberal on lgbt issues.independents, suburban white voters it will only give them the people they already got. older white, religious voters. >> i'm worried about the discourse. i tuesday a lot too. young people don't care about this, because we need you to care about this, particularly if the driving issues in an lgbt aend gentleman are lg issues and we need people to understand and care and worry about concerns of transamericans. >> and frankly, i think conservatives have done us a real favor by attacking lgbt people, i don't know how else to say this. it means we're part of who you defend if you are a reasonable person. >> that is lovely. >> and i thank probably gets me in trouble in some quarters, we wren on the map before we started accident tacks this much. and real people who have transkids, who work with gay people, they know we're not the scary monsters that everybody says, and now everybody knows, every reasonable person knows we exist, not a choice. in some ways, it set us back a little. but it's

today, to have federal appeals court to recognize the basic humanity of lgbt people everywhere, it is a time for celebration and a time for all of us come together as a community. we have to get back to work because the fight is not done and we have to pass through to the very end where we have marriage equality for every single person in this country. my name is rebecca, executive director of the san francisco lgbt community center.i am here to speak on behalf of cpmc and the plan to rebuild. the center is a nonprofit organization serving about 9000 people a month. really looking at connecting individuals, resources, and opportunities to build a stronger and healthier lgbt community. we have active partnerships with over seven tiverton on profits in the city, looking at developing an extended -- extensive program to reach the committee. cpmc is an integral partner to us. the not only provide us with funding, but they look at a deep partnership to help serve the lgbt committee, including supporting a program that serves about 6000 people a year, connecting them to safety net services, and critical services necessary for individuals for survival. they are a key partner and have been a longtime partner. they also partner with many of our collaborative organizations. they have a deep commitment to the community-based organizations and looking at how to support health and wellness across a broad spectrum of community

i helped to build the lgbt community center. i started doing campaigns. i gradually got involved in democratic party politics. i got involved in the alice b. toklas democratic club. i ran for the democratic central committee in 2004. i ended up sharing the committee. it was a gradual process for me. by the time i started thinking about running for supervisor, it made sense because of my involvement in the community and in politics. >> what did you learn from campaigning for supervisor? >> i learned a lot. i knocked on about $15,000. -- i knocked about 15,000 doors. i met a huge number of people. that is the best way to learn about the neighborhood, the city, and what people want and what their concerns are. i feel i can do so much more than before and started campaigning. -- i feel like i know so much more than before i started campaigning. we're all part of the left on the national standard. i am a good liberal democrat. in the san francisco spectrum, and probably considered more middle of the road. -- i am probably considered more middle-of-the-road. i

we had to protect the lgbt community in the valley. there was less drugs because the scene and cleaned up. the gays have turned it into a very clean, welcoming environment. there was no security guard by the time a year-and-a-half came up because lesbian and gay bars are known for safety. we are the people who will be going to this bar. you think any of us are going to be selling drugs or doing drugs, i know the majority of these people and i can tell you from personal experience from knowing them for so long that none of them would. i believe the main issues with drugs and alcohol is not from the people going to these bars paying $10 for a hot cup cranberry. and at the heart of the lgbt movement is love. started thousands of years ago but more recently at the stonewall inn in new york city. where a bench of drag queens and gay men, sissy boys, and people of color said enough. we will love who we want to love and we will fight for it and i believe that love will win out. and i have great hope for this in the future of love. and the future of our ability to marry each other. in states like maine where we can make history this year, where they are putting the first pro-active marriage measure on the ballot and we need all your help to win, this will make history, the first time we've ever won on pro-active ballot measure. they initiate projects to promote visibility of inclusion of the lgbt key community -- lgbtq community. this averts are complemented by training for school staff. the type of work is imperative at the middle and high school level because they are hungry to be represented and affirmed in a school community. we had a latino if greater you've got himself in front of the entire school community and be embraced -- a latino youth out himself. last year, my class began with just one out middle schoolers, but by the end of my class, half of my students have come out. this-attending our trains are emerging as strong advocates, not just button-wearing allies, and feel more confident supporting queer students. this speaks to the importance of this type of formalized consistent partnership between a community organization and a school community. as a mission native and as a queer latina, it is important to me that the city supports cross community partnerships, representing -- understanding that there are many youth that is across cultural identities.
