>> they were conservatives who advocate for lgbtq quality. the formed a convention in 1980 but they also organized in the 1970's. they are a relatively small group. i think they are important for two reasons. the first is because as gay republicans they face a lot of challenges over the years. they have been working for almost 40 years. see gay rights and conservatives as mutually reinforcing. without that rise of the conservative movement in the 60's. and the gay-rights movement which is something fundamentally new. they are a educational foundation, they do believe in a two-part strategy. voters are only democrats, they feel that they will take advantage of them and ignore them. the republican party will do away altogether. very hard to convince republican voters and policymakers to support lgbt quality -- equality. they do a lot of work behind the scenes. one of the things i have learned oftenthem is that they in theposition that is republican party. there is a lot that comes behind the scenes. what has been some of their success? >> as yo

so for gender nonconforming or lgbtq students, if we call them defiant or messy, if we say that they are a problem we are setting certain things in motion. we are helping us see them. we're helping them see themselves. we are giving ourselves a framework through which we create the policies and practices and processes that we will use to manage our interactions with them. next slide, please. so if we are thinking about why we're here and what we are doing and how to use our work in ways that will keep young people out of prison, and if we are trying to be really intentional about the stories that frame the way we speak about young people, that frames the way we interact with young people, then it's quite natural i think to begin focusing on our natural urge, at least it seems natural, to punish. we are very good at that. we are really, really good at retribution in our schools. and we are really good at applying punishment and discipline disproportionally to folks of color, really good. let me show you how good. in the next slide, i laid out just a sample of some of the ways that we
