and lgbtq people are everywhere. the same percentage of lgbtq and kansas as anywhere else in the country. what's especially interesting about kansas is that topeka is home of the westboro baptist church so when people think about the little tiny group of protesters about 20 or so years ago protesting funerals with the signs that say god hates fags and other sort of unpleasant things. that's a group of people that is based in topeka kansas. kansas is a very complicated place it has a reputation of being a red state right in the heartland but its history really goes back to the pre-civil war days it was really established to be a free state and there was this really bloody border between the slave state and kansas, kansas very proud of its free state history. what's interesting about the lgbtq movement in kansas is that back in 1978 wichita was one of the first cities that tried to pass an ordinance protecting lgbtq people from discrimination, it was a huge controversy and did not go well. when that didn't work, people

as a proud could president of the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club, i am thrilled to see this legacy thrive and this movement continue to build momentum. as a club, we were founded on the idea that queer people needed to organize for our collective interests and safety. we were tired of seeing our community overlooked and abused by the city and its institutions, institutions we we helped to build and fund and that were supposed to protect us. we demanded that our value, our citizenships, and our humanity be recognized. but change happened slowly. while we have made progress over the last several decades, in many ways, the same o oppressive systems, though weakened, still exist. as we push forward, oppression pushes back. we see this in our most vulnerable communities who always end up serving as scapegoats. we see this in the transgender community, including being able to serve in the military, being denied to use the rest room, being denied service and even attempting to deny us the right to exist. we see this in the despicable attacks on immigrants through the introduction of uncon

what's interesting about the lgbtq movement in kansas is that back in like 1978, wichita was one of the first cities that has come tried to pass an ordinance protecting lgbtq people from discrimination when is a huge controversy, and it did not go well. when that didn't work people just sort of retreated and went about their daily lives. i don't think that there was necessarily anything special or unique about wichita. it's the biggest city in the state. it's a big city, and cities in kansas go pixel you had an urban population there. you had i gay community of folks who left their small towns and gone to the big city. the movement was sort of started by small group of people there, like i think happens and all small towns and small states with just a few people who decide to do something. i think through the '80s much of a gay communities efforts were focused on fighting aids. and so that took the focus in the efforts certainly for a lot of people. i don't know that a lot happened then until the mid-2000s wing kansas, like many other states around the country, decided to pass the const

optometry offices primarily just primarily serve the lgbtq community and we probably take care of theision needs and we passionately support the visions of the castro. our neighborhood is a welcoming place that stand strong and united even in the face of bigotry or an epidemic. we are proud to be part of this unique community. during the early years of the aids crisis, our office is one of the few offices in the world where patients who had an aids or h.i.v. diagnosis can be open about that and new that they would be treated with compassion and respect. there were terrible fears of blindness from aids and to be able to talk to your doctor straight out about what medications you were on and what your symptoms were, and not try to hide. it is very important. these patients knew we would treat them and we can treat them well and we will continue this tradition today. we treat all people with dignity and kindness no matter who they are, or whom they love. a few examples of other ways for your eyes atop -- optometry serves a community include sponsoring the gay bowling team back in the 198
