kate sosin is the lgbtq+ reporter for the 19th news., there are a lot of bills, but can you give us an idea of the range of things these bills would do? >> there are currently two main types being considered in legislatures across the country. one is this transgender sports band which mostly seeks to limit transgender participation in sports, particularly transgender young girls playing on girls teams. the other is a ban on transgender medical care for youth. young people, when they reach a certain age, if they have gender dysphoria, which means they experience mental duress because they are transgender, might not want to go through puberty. their doctors might prescribe them puberty blockers so they don't have to go through puberty and can make a decision when they're older about whether or not they want to medically transition. it is a temporary pause on puberty and this would make it illegal for them to get that gender affirming care that medical organizations and doctors have decided is the appropriate care for transgender youth. jo

we have a couple, lgbtq couple looking to purchase a home or rent an apartment. credit or issues with them actually being processed. when the lapd lord found out that they had this, quote, unique relationship, the landlord emailed them and said they were being denied the apartment because of their unique relationship. and they lived in a state without any state protections under state law so they had no recourse. so you know the past years the trump administration advanced policies to discriminate against lgbtq people. so we've also seen instances where people face discrimination, as i said before, in going into retail establishments or going into stores. and they have no recourse. i could, for example, be picked to sit on a jury and i can be dismissed from sitting on that jury because i'm lgbtq and i would have no recourse under federal law, unless you live in a state that has those protections, you have no recourse. and 29 states in this country do not provide comprehensive legal protections to lgbtq people. >> president of the human rights campaign, alfonso da

as you know, lgbtq youth are four times greater at youth -- risk for things like suicide. how do we ensure these kids have access to mental health services, especially for kids who don't feel safe in their own homes? we are seeing that that is almost three times the rate with covid that lgbtq youth are feeling not safe at home. dr. amaya-jackson: thank you for that question. we know that lgbtq use and adults have long been burdened, self injury, suicidal thoughts and intent. they have higher rates of attempting suicide and experience trauma at higher rates than their straight peers. we know where we can intervene; in these places where youth are experiencing bullying, dramatic forms of societal stigma, bias, and particularly, family rejection, which is very problematic, and makes their ability to cope with some of these other things less possible. the other problem is, historically, professionals have been less successful in recognizing and meeting the needs of traumatized lgbtq youth that perpetuates many of their genetic experiences. i think the issue is making sure that
