june is lgbtq pride month. usually we are used to this kind of a conversation about lgbtq life in a public arena within the political spectrum. one of the stories we don't talk about much is lgbtq life in the faith community. i would like to invite you into a conversation with maxine epstein who is director of institutional advancement at the jewish community high school of the bay in san francisco and the rabbi is the director of music at the congregation bethel in berkeley. welcome. >> thank you. >> this is a different kind of a conversation that we usually have but lgbtq life in a faith community in the jewish community, let's start and ask each of you what has your experience been in the jewish community itself? maxine. >> wow, well, i am going to date myself. i am twice blessed. being a lesbian and being jewish, it was difficult because i didn't come out until graduate school. i didn't think being queer had anything to being jewish. i had no role models, had no one to model myself after. i didn't think i c

in addition, access to lgbtq is a plus. culture advances understanding and respect for trans and people and communities among all residents of the castro. and visitors to the neighborhood. the impact is strengthened when diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility are centered now one example of the activities the district has undertaken to address these concerns is the living lesbian legends project, an initiative to honor women who have made contributions to the castro and to the wider community. >> so what are the right? well living lesbian legends presented a well-received exhibition at arts featured on castro street and is now working on supporting the creation of a public mural that will be visible from 18th street and castro street both actions are in keeping with the chess report recommendation number seven which calls for the district and i'm quoting to collaborate with the city nonprofits and for profit enterprises and landlords of commercial properties to develop programs and resources to display the work of l

and bridges and all sorts of things. >> you started making news back home by being one of the two lgbtq women in the state snap. how has that laid an -- for you? >> claire and i were elected the same year. i think it testified to the caucus that there were some gaps. you know it matters that we bring our voices and our neighbors' voices with us into the halls of power. because we get to shape legislation, whether through amendment or just educating our colleagues about the way we talk about community that makes folks in community feel more seen and heard and respected. we passed a lot of lgbtq protections in the legislature in washington during the first trump administration in advance of this one and now i'm bringing those neighbors' voices with me, those experiences to keep fighting for all of our community. >> when you ran for the house seat that you now occupy you did receive a number of high-profile endorsements in washington. what was it like campaigning for the ho us? >> it was a different adventure. i had run two of the toughest campaigns in the state so i knew what tough campai
