let's turn our attention to libby casey in washington. libby is there any indication that the u.s.ay expand i its -- operations against islamic state. >> we're hearing a lot of concern over just how powerful and deadly the islamic state may be at this point. the question is what can be done right now? and while we're hearing a lot of concern, it's unclear how much muscle the united states is willing to put behind its words. we heard a warning from chuck hagel yesterday. i want to give you a sense of the language he is using. take a listen. >> they are beyond just a terrorist group. they marry ideology, a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess, they are tremendously well founded -- funded. oh, this is beyond anything we have seen. so you have to take a cold steely-heart look at it and get ready. >> you hear there the strong language that the defense secretary is using as he is warning that the danger the islamic state presents not just in iraq and syria, but also back in the u.s. and europe. they are voicing concerns that people may be flocking to iraq and syria,

. >> libby casey is live in washington, and libby, it anything that we know more about this airstrike this morning? >> well, david, the pentagon initially announced the airstrike by twitter, which shows the age that we're living in, and we do have details about the fact that we were targeting this mobile artillery feeder that they were using to target forces. and in erbil, they're worried about the kurdish population, essentially the kurdish capital. it was made by central command. and they can do that, because they have the authorization to launch airstrikes from president barack obama. abdullah, the oarage, from the u.s., the faa has banned passenger flights over iraq, citing the hazardous situation. more as we get briefing from the white house about what may happen next. >> let's listen to the white house spokesman addressing reporters. >> come on, let's set the record straight, there we go, all right. i don't have any announcements at the top, so we'll go straight to questions, and darlene, do you want to get us started? >> reporter: following up on iraq and the airstrike earlier

libby casey is at the white house right now. tell us more about what we know about yesterday's attack. >> reporter: well, he was an afghan soldier and told the associated press that he was in his early 20s and had been in the army for more than two years. the official said that he came back from a routine patrol, hid in the bathroom and kept his n.a.t.o.-issued assault rifle with him and staged the attack. there have been a number of so-called green on blue attacks in recent years. they spiked in 2012. it had gone down in afghanistan in the two years since because of the increased security and troop level in afghanistan. rear admiral john kirby talked about the challenge of preventing these attacks as the u.s. prepares to draw down troops even further. >> it's a pernicious threat, and it's difficult to always ascertain. to come to grips with the scope of it anywhere you are particularly in places like afghanistan. so afghanistan is still a war zone. >> reporter: tightening up of security can only go so far, del, because these ar

libby casey is in washington with that. >> reporter: a handful of countries are providing or have promised weapons and supplies to kurdish fighters in iraq, the peshmerga. there already is a degree of coordination. u.s. officials are saying it's not just up to western allies to fight against the islamic state. they are also looking to regional government because they say they can win over the hearts and minds of "the sun"ni population and turn them against the islamic state fighters. it's not just military actions in iraq, the u.s. is doing and over syria that it's considering, u.s. officials are also looking at beefed up humanitarian aid. it has already offered aid to the yaziti people, on the run, being persecuted by islamic state fighters. they sought refuge on mount sinjar. the u.s. is looking at helping the shiite turkmen. they have been fighting islamic state forces in northern iraq and the head of the u.n. assistance mission in iraq called the situation for them desperate this week and is urging action. now, the white house will not give specifics on the timing or the extent of any

libby casey, what i felt fascinating about what the president said he had maintained there would be no on the ground in iraq and he announced the boots that were on the ground that those special forces that assessed the situation have been pulled back. >> reporter: that's right, del. we heard from the spokesman of the white house just yesterday that there might be more forces needed to help with an evacuation down from the mountain but as we heard from defense department officials, the president reiterating it today, that will not be necessary. but it did look like for a moment there might be a stepped up operation to bring the yazidis down off the mountain. the president crediting the use of u.s. forces, and the peshmerga dealing with the situation on the ground at the base of the mountain but also the humanitarian drops that have come from the u.s. the president talked numbers, 114,000 meals, 35,000 gallons of water many dropped every night. he says that the humanitarian need is no longer there. they won't have to be doing more drops. because there are less yazidi on the mountain tha

casualties but the president signed a bill giving $225 million for the missile defense system and libby caseys in washington and the decision to grant the money a surprise so what prompted this move? >> not a surprise because we have given israel 235 million for the missile defense shield and because of the heavy use the system is under going israel came to the u.s. and asked for more and the pentagon supported it and asked congress to sign on. perhaps the surprise is in such a congress that is divided members of house and senate agreed on the funding on friday and passed this sizable spending bill. now, you may imagine a giant shield when you hear the is phrase iron dome but it's a defense system that can travel 2 1/2 miles to 40 miles to shoot down rockets and israel claims 90% success rate right now at shooting down hamas rockets, del. >> the $225 million does this mean the u.s. is giving israel its full support? >> well, when the white house put out a statement last night in conjunction with the president's signing of this funding it expressed pride in being able to fund iron dome and it
