stop the corporate rape of the public library, don't give money to the friends of library, don't accept money from the friends of the library. everyone knows that the influence of private money on our politics has the power to destroy democracy and distort public policy. if you have been following these presentations, you know by now that any claim to legitimacy that the friends of the library had, has completely collapsed. we know from reports submitted to the california state -- that the friends of the library had income in the past 11 years of 40 million, and expenditures of 48.1 million. we also know from reports required by the san francisco sunshine ordinance that over the same 11 years the friends of the library gave just 4.9 million to the library for any purpose. the friends are under new leadership and at a recent library commission meeting the friends admitted in the most recent year 309,000 or 41% of its expenditures benefiting the library were restricted funds and only 441,000 were unrestricted. but restricted funds are usually bequests. and if that were typical then over t

she spent many countless hours in the nashville public library. it was her family life that was bountiful and flowing with tales told by her story telling grandfather. raised with love of reading and oral tradition. graduated from tennessee state and degree in english in 1964. she married her childhood friend on december 12. they are the parents of fredrick and twins robert and john. her education continued with a master's degree in early childhood literature, and programming in 1975 from webster university. patricia has a successful career as a teacher and children's book editor. she changed careers to become a full time writer of children and young adult books. her goal is to create books for and about african-americans. i write because there is a need to have books for, by and about the african-american experience and how we helped to develop this country. i present to you patricia makinsik heart of literacy. >> i am from st. louis, missouri. a lot of you think i have said it in correctly when i said missouri. you think i got it slid into my so

of course, the library of congress was initially the library of thomas jefferson. that's what started the library of congress. it was established in 1800. this country's first federal cultural institution. it's the largest library in the world. 35 million books, 830 miles of book shelves. the numbers are staggering. almost 10,000 new items are added every day. for 25 years the library of congress has been -- the librarian of congress has been dr. james billington, a faithful and effective leader. i first got to know dr. billington in 1986 when i came to the senate. there was a little squabble between a couple of more senior senators, which was a wonderful opportunity for me because one of the very senior senators thought that maybe he deserved more than being the chair of the subcommittee on legislative branch. i grabbed that. i was happy to do that. i loved that. i loved that experience. i learned a lot about what goes on here, how we pay for things. at that time there was an effort to really hurt the library of congress. i had that opportunity to stand up for the

the friends has been turned over, completely with no oversight by the library commission or the library. they spend million and spend millions in the year in the names of the citizens in this city. the library commission and the lie braeer an come before the public saying that they are doing a wonderful job and now we find out through the public record requests that they have no idea whether the statements they are making have any truth at all. none. >> the chief financial officer of the librarian singleton has admitted that she has no idea about $5 million that has been given to the branch library improvement program which they have nothing to up sport. they don't know what it consists of and they have nothing but a number. an imagine narry number as i have mentioned before. and when this was a redevelopment agency, i took some comfort in knowing that the state was going to do a final audit to determine what was going to happen and we know that there have been cases in the state where the redevelopment funds have been founded to be expended illegally in millions and millions of dollars

the friends of the library.n evolved as a social species by developing a sense of social obligation and community loyalty. we have a society because man has developed a conscience and a sense of shame for socially irresponsible actions. as you know the president of the library commission violated someone's right to make public comment and the sunshine task force found it so egregious it constituted misconduct. ethics more than a year ago found a finding of official misconduct and recommended to the mayor of san francisco that she be removed from the library commission. to date the mayor has made no response of any kind and taken no action against his employee found guilty of official misconduct. this is the legendary recording of the president of the library commission. >> (playing tape. ). >> as far as the mayor's concerned his appointee is a member of his gang. and so official misconduct has no meaning. if the mayor is not ashamed to have a president of the library commission guilty of official misconduct, we

i'm peter warfield, executive director of library users association. decision that's reasonable with respect to enabling the now-paralyzed sunshine ordinance task force to be able to meet again. certainly the previous speaker, who mentioned your supposed ignorance about the qualifications is right. i think that's a very, very poor performance to supposedly not know what the requirements are for a seat, and particularly when it's explicitly written into the law. there shall, at all times, be a member of the sunshine task force who is physically disabled. it speaks to a severe failure on the part of the board of supervisors and/or its clerk and/or the city attorney. this is something that you can fix today. with respect to the candidates, certainly you have one with the requirements that you list in your agenda, who stands far above the others in terms of demonstrated interest in/and experience in issues of citizen access and participation in local government. and i certainly would mm
