she was so kind to me that i loved librarians. when they ask me to do something, it is hard for me to say no. and that is why i flew in the dark at night from atlanta to come out here. [laughter]. but it is because of that generosity of the national public library. so i went there to get my books and i would bring them home and read all 3. then the next week i would take them back to the library. i would read often. when you read better, you read success. i credit the national public library with my successes as a young reader and a young writer. my grandfather had 2 books on his shelf. one was king james version of the bible, the other was bull finch's mythology. it was that thick and on the mantle. i can see it as clearly as i am looking at them now. keu remember looking at the pictures and beginning to pick through some of the stories. and i learned to love those stories and if you read my books as a collection, and some people have, you will see that those 2 books inform most of my writings in subtle ways, not overt, in subtle

every thursday morning, the librarians read and sing songs. you can see dozens of children with parents, grandparents, nannies -- until a year ago, when the library was told that because the building was so decrepit it did not meet ada standards and the program had to leave the library. fortunately, recreation and park give them a facility down the street. when an early childhood literacy program is forced to abandon the library because the building does not fit -- is not safe and does not meet requirements, you know your library is not serving the community. children like mine are so excited to get a new library in the playground. i would like to see that street vacated so that children can cross the street safely. i urge you very much to support the street vacation and support a new library and park for all of the families like mine that are raising kids in north beach. thank you. >> i am jane winslow. i have been a resident in the neighborhood for over 40 years. i was a pregnant young mother when i first started using the branch library. no

[applause] so, i went to the library, i talked to the librarian we looked up 580 cell rities and sports heroes. over 3 months i hand typed 580 letters and wrote dollar michael jordan and dear mr. stalone. guess what happened? nothing. at christmas i got a check from tom brocaw for a hundred dollars. i sold my car a buick for 500 dollars in a seedy area in oakland. by spring i raised 200 dollars. my marth was a principal at an elementary school. she invited me to talk to the kids. when i was leaving a fourth grader looked me in the eye and said, i have a piggy bank at home and i will help you raise money for the school in pakistan. i didn't think anything of it. 6 weeks later the school is raised 65,000 penes. >> main stage's loud efts performance was about bief the detroit native high strung. they had an energyic performance. the concert was a plash back to the kinks and the who and tv shows like hala blue. ladies and gentlemen. the high strung. our city librarian. >> good afternoon. first and foremost, you are probably wondering what this is all about. i am very proud of the fact that today, i spent part of my day at argon elementary school to read poetry to youngsters from first graders through fourth graders, and i had the pleasure of having the general manager of the recreation and park department join me for that, so it was terrific. i mention that because it emphasizes the relationship that we established with the school district in terms of forging a very strong relationship, but today, i'm also here to ask for your support and endorsement of our literacy -- information literacy program that we have. in a nutshell, we are wanting to have 100% participation and ownership of a san francisco public library card for all kindergarten and first grade children. we have begun that effort by having the great collaboration of all the 500 classroom teachers literally issue out the applications. we will be reporting that back to our library and staff so that we begin b

the librarian tells me. read the newspaper so i know that unusual is the polite word for murdered or murderer. why else would a poor person's name apeer in the news? why do i think the newspapers then report differently from today's news? i'm here in ireland reading every paper just in case. i will move ahead. the lacies lived in cottage and palace. in 1848 dozens of families left cottage and the adjoining towns of pad ox, dogs town and palace. i find no mentions of evictions in the newspaper. 731 reported people the largest eviction of a town land in one day happened not 20 miles from cottage and palace in april of 1849. the story had one short paragraph about it in the paper. could it be that most evictions did not make it to the newspaper unless someone died? in the news of january 19th 1848, judith was ejected off a small farm by the landlords james and john parker. she wandered in want without shelter and entered her former abode on the 18th of august last. for this forceable possession shes tried and s

we have the city librarian and a director of inter-agency planning.se, we have staff that is much more knowledgeable than i am. i will figure out how to do this. as we all know, summer school, summer needs, summer services are always great. particularly for this summer school, we are looking at public schools and in much earlier than before, perhaps a week or two earlier. the last day will be may 27. school will start again august 15. as a response to that, the city has gotten together and put together -- and one thing i want to call your attention to is on march 19, the san francisco unified school district along with dcys will be hosting our sixth annual summer resource fair. the san francisco examiner put it on again this year. we had approximately 200 summer school because of the larger venue, we will have more participants. we can advertise this event with our parents in this city. the parents that are listening or watching today, if you want to find out about any type of parent related services or activities, they are looking for an after-school

as a librarian, i have a very strong sense of the public comments and the public good. these are not meant to raise money, they are not meant to generate revenue. as someone said earlier, the penny wise and a pound foolish. the whole atmosphere of san francisco is against having this kind of fee imposed and the privatization of the commons. i used to work for the san francisco botanical gardens society. i was there until april of last year. they have cut the library, use education back to practically nothing. they're putting all of their funding into trying to institute the fee and maintain it. we know it makes no sense financially. they are happy to have access restricted. they think that this is only for the few. they are unhappy about what was referred to as a mere comments which does not show that she understands what the idea of the public comments is. this is good for our physical and mental health, quality of life as a tourist destination and this is completely foolish to try and impose -- to think about penny pinching. the people who can appear running social se
