so you know, this is now the tea party of the left as joe lieberman said of "the hill" newspaper. left progressive are leading a movement that speaks for a tiny portion of the electorate. they don't have a mandate. where is the bipartisan pushback against that? because we sure have seen far lefter bullying, they tried to occupy the department of the interior this weekend. not a lot of media coverage of that, right? >> it is. you know what's scariest, what happened during the obama administration when the irs was targeting the tea party, this is, this is back to that same approach once again. the irs should never be used as a tool against american citizens. it is unacceptable. it is horrifying. it should be a bipartisan approach of folks being against it. liz: we're showing far left activists pushing against cops last thursday t happened through the weekend to as they tried to push their way into federal buildings in washington to occupy them. democrat senator joe manchin is saying no to, he doesn't like the 150 billion-dollar clean electricity plan. this is the democrats signature

to ask you about your reaction to comments from a guest we had on yesterday, former senator joe liebermanin a book he writes that the problem now is centrists in both parties have what a hard time getting renominated in their party, and most have no viable third-party option in the general election. changing both parts of that political reality is one of the great challenges for american politics in the years ahead. does it feel like in the democratic party that there is a center -- and the republican -- a place where there can be some common compromise? guest: i know joe from way back and i know where he is coming from politically, and there is truth to what he says. both parties have become more homogeneous internally and more ideological in terms of being identifiable, conservative and liberal parties. having said that, i do think it is asymmetrical as a political scientist has said. the polarization phenomenon the republican side look somewhat different. them driving away two speakers in the last decade. the tea party, the trump phenomenon, the freedom caucus, it has made it very hard

senator lieberman, welcome to "washington journal." >> thanks, good morning to you and good to be with you. >> by my count, this is your ninth book, "the centrist solution" is the title of the book, "how we made government work and can make it work again." why did you write the book and why now? >> thanks for asking, thanks for having me on. so this is a book i've been thinking about writing for a long time. it's a strange thing to say, but the pandemic and the fact that i was home and working from home, not just spending time on the road, gave me extra time to write the book. the main point is that like most of americans, i'm frustrated by the lack of accomplishment by our federal government, congress, and the president. and i get disappointed, i get angry, and i decided, well, maybe i have something i can do to help it a little bit which is to talk about the way in which the greatest -- the things that i feel best about that i did in my 24 years in the u.s. senate all were bipartisan and happened from the center out. and they cover, as i describe in the book, a wide range of policy a
