abc 7 news reporter lieian melendez is live in the newsroom to help explain this change of heart. lyanne. >> reporter: airbnb simply ran out of ways to force people to register, and they are still fighting. for example, with regard to a proposed 60 day-cap on most airbnb rentals the company said residents will be harmed by this newest proposal. kipa has long been an airbnb host. when the medical bills started piling up, she turned to the home-sharing site. >> other people are paying for dental work, taking care of elderly parents. i mean, everybody's got a story. >> reporter: she is registered with the city as an airbnb host and many more are not. after years of holding out, airbnb now says it will cooperate with the city and its mandatory registration system by giving out names and addresses of their hosts. why the sudden shift? last june the board of supervisors passed an ordinance that said airbnb could only collect booking fees off the units that are legally registered. airbnb went to court to try to stop city but last week a federal judge hinted it would not side with airbnb.
