cbs' lilia luciano is at l.a.x. tonight with more. lilia. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. there are long lines here at l.a.x. and at airports nationwide. that's proof that the holiday travel rush is on, and with it, of course, the masks. spring break travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, with millions of fliers facing jam-packed airports, higher prices, and concerns about covid. >> i just try to be as careful as i can. >> reporter: more than two million travelers went through t.s.a. checkpoints friday, a jump of nearly 55% from 2020. the increased demand is leading to some flight cancellations, with pilot shortages and protests over working conditions. we ha the same concerns and frustrations as the flying public. it leaves us stranded without answers. we are dealing with the angry passengers. >> reporter: the holiday weekend rush comes as new covid daily infections nationwide have jumped 32% in a week. and while there's a slight uptick in hospitalizations, health officials remain optimistic. >> if things go as we expect, the hospitals will remain quiet, and that's

lilia luciano joins us now in los angeles with more. lilia. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. since january, more than 800,000 acres have burned across the nation in wildfires. and right now, currently, there's more than 2,000 fire officials fighting flames. wildfires are raging across parts of the southwest, scorching more than 100,000 acres, destroying dozens of homes, and forcing hundreds to evacuate. uncontrolled flames, spurred on by a mega-drought and ferocious winds further spreading the fires. >> the fire was so hot, it broke all the windows on the back of our house. >> reporter: sporadic snow and rain had little effect dousing the tunnel fire near flagstaff, arizona, now in its sixth day, with only 3% containment. another two fires merged outside santa fe, new mexico, with at least four additional fires burning in that state. the same weather system that triggered red flag warnings in the southwest is creating blizzard conditions in the upper rockies and plains, and parts of the central u.s. could get hit by strong storms pking high winds, hail, and even tornadoes. me

lilia luciano explains. >> reporter: bobby alvarez carries the words of his mom tattooed on his chest>> i'll always be with you and here i'll always stay. it's close to my heart. >> reporter: time is almost up for melissa lucio, the mother of 14 children scheduled for execution on wednesday, accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter mariah. >> it was an accident. if they go through with it they'll be killing an innocent woman. >> reporter: lucio and her mariah fell down a flight of s - stairs. when the medical examiner saw the toddler's body covered in bruises, it was ruled child abuse. >> are you a cold-blooded killer? >> no, i'm not. >> over 100 times she asserted her innocence. they refused to listen sending the message that this interrogation wasn't going to stop until she told the officers what they wanted to hear. >> reporter: and she did, saying she spanked the child but never admitting to using any deadly force. that demonstration sealed lucio's fate. why do you think she confessed? >> her so-called confession was the result of highly coercive interrogation tactics. >> report
