abc7 news reporter lilian kim joins us live with the latest. lilian. >> katie, this is one of the homes that sustained major damage. it is among a string of houses that sits along highway 101 and separated only by a retaining wall. the smoke could be seen from miles away. the fire started just after 3:00 p.m. when he was on his way to the san jose home. >> i could see the smoke and i was like there is no way that will be my place. >> it turned out his house was one of five homes on snow drive that sustained damage. three badly. his home was a total loss. >> so i came when the try ignited and i watched the fire go down. by that point there is nothing any of us can do. >> the fire started down the street about a quarter mile away at this home. witnesses saw a fence go up in flames which quickly gutted the house and the one next door. their daughter noticed the smoke from the bedroom. >> dad, there's a fire there's a tire! he started to put it out but it got too big and it just happened to -- he grabbed the keys. >> he jumped over the retaining wal

lilian kim has details. >> reporter: san jose firefighters now have the situation under control but auses were damaged. three of them badly. you can see some of the burped rooftops down below on snow drive. everyone made it out alive. a neighbor took video of the fire soon after it stated, and witnesses say it grew quickly. it was three alarms. at this point cause is unknown but firefighters believe it started on a fence between two of the home. 12 people are now displaced. we spoke to one woman who was at home when the fire started. she said she noticed the smoke in her bedroom. >> they said fire, fire and trying to built out but got to big, and then it just happened to -- he was like, just grab the keys, let's go. we got our dog. going to go back inside because once i did, things were already in my room. mine and my brother's room were the closest ones to the fire. >> reporter: at the same time there was a fire along
