abc 7 news reporter lilian kim has that. >> reporter: firefighters are battling as many as 17 wildfire. now the trump administration says it wants to help by lifting limits on waterways. the secretary of commerce issued a directive to federal agencies to prioritize protection of life and property ecs. spite the fact that the director of cal fire says water isn't an issue. >> we have plenty of water. we have many lakes that are directly accessing from helicopters to drop that water on the fires and our fire engines have access to water on the ground. >> reporter: the trump administration's directive follow tweets made by the president. on sunday he tweeted california wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing water to be properly utilized. critics say mr. trump is exploiting the wildfires for political gain. stirring up an ongoing water dispute between farmers and environmental groups. >> this isn't the right time for armchair fire chiefs in washington, d.c., to try to tell california how to fight fires. >> reporter: john mcm
