. >> liliana mason, professor of clinical science at john hopkins institute and coauthor of radical american partisanship mapping violent hostility causes and consequences. thank you so much for joining us today. >> thank you. >> welcome back. we are joined by dena titus, a democrat from nevada and a member of the foreign affairs and homeland security committees. welcome to the program. >> thank you. >> you serve on the homeland security committee. can you respond to yesterday's proceedings of republicans efforts to impeach secretary mayor,. >> it was a very politically big hearing. we have had 15 hearings so far and not come with any kind of solution or any kind of bipartisan plan to deal with the crisis of the border, and the senates, they are working in a bipartisan way and with the secretary, but not so in the house. the speakers were three republican attorneys general from states that went for donald trump. our witness was a legal scholar throughout the country known for his work on impeachment. all the questions were just blasting the biden administration showing pictures of the border

>> social polarization expert, liliana mason offered this answer to the "washington post," quote, it'sn that's based on our feelings for each other, not based on extremely divergent policy preferences. and she joins us this morning. she's a political science professor at johns hopkins, also the coauthor of radical american partisanship, mapping violent hostility, causes and consequences for democracy. we're chatting with you in the break saying this is the kitchen table topic, outside of affordability in the economy, people are so mad, and families around america are trying to figure out why. i think we know how we got here. how do you diagnose this american disease? fair to call it that? >> i would say it's sort of a puzzle. basically 10 to 15 years ago we started noticing political scientists started noticing that americans on average actually don't have extreme policy preferences, and the preferences of democrats and republicans are pretty overlapping, even still. but what has really changed is that democrats and republicans really hate each other a lot more, and that level of hate

we are joined by liliana mason from johns hopkins and the co-author of the book called " radical americanion ship." welcome to the program. guest: thank you so much for having me. host: let's start with the institute. tell us about what the focus of your research is. guest: the missionsns gore to strengthen global democracy by research group public facing work and explaining things to the public and providing advice to public officials and of course having increased quality of dialogue across differences and trying to encourage a democracy that includes all the parts of our society. i particularly study partisanship, polarization in the u.s. and now attitudes about political violence in the u.s. and americans'acceptance of higher levels of political violence and threats. host: let's talk about that. here is a headline from the washington post that says violent political threats surges 2024 begins hunting american democracy. what do you think is behind that surge? guest: this is the surge in the new year but this is -- it didn't just start right now. this is been something that's been incr
