david: you joined eli lilly when?> i followed my girlfriend, now my wife, who was going to school in indiana. back to indiana. i needed something to do there. i decided to enroll in the m.b.a. program. medicine is a four-year degree, m.b.a. is two, i still needed something to do in indiana so i joined lilly. david: what was your position in the beginning? >> i was in the department that looked at m&a transactions. and the finance and business development group. great introduction. david: did you ever say i'm going to be the c.e.o. someday? >> not then. i was thinking i'll be here for two years and then off to chicago or san francisco and do something different. but i fell in love with the company. i mean, it's an amazing place. it's a very humanistic culture. but yet very rigorous and scientific. so it's demanding, smart people but people are nice to each other. it's the midwest. and i fell in love with the mission. what could be better than making medicine for people? i worked on a medicine to collaborate and bring i

one of the leading manufacturers of those is eli lilly. it has transformed itself over the last five years to a company that is now one of the most valuable pharmaceutical companies in the world. i sat down with dave ricks to talk about this anti-obesity phenomenon and how it's transforming america. let's talk about the phenomenon that's changed the world to some extent, which is the anti-obesity drug. now make sure everybody is on the same page, what is the name of your anti-obesity drug. dave: so the name is zepbound. the active ingredient is called tirzapetide. david: who comes up with these names? where do you get these names? dave: not me, david. we can't have names too close to each other because doctors make prescribing errors. we can't have names that make claims about what the drugs do, and can't have drugs that are only good in english. so we end up with strange names. david: was that the intention when the drug was being developed? dave: pretty early on. we launched the first gp-1 medication in the world in 2005. it was a twice

eli lilly is the top pick.d you are seeing over the next five years, $175 billion of revenue will basically fall off the patent cliff. what does that mean for the verall industry and what companies are the most exposed to that and least exposed to that >> frank, obviously, as you know, patents are at the center of the development and innovation in the sector drug companies have patents with the drugs. the patents expire typically after 20 years companies have to continually innovate to continue to drive new innovation and outer year revenue growth they have $175 billion rolling off by the end of the decade how do companies navigate that period of time pipelines and product cycles are the life blood of the sector we talked about in eli lilly with zepbound is the key piece of innovation. the other is external innovation they look through business development and m&a to bring in additional drugs to drive revenue growth and innovation. those are the two ways we continue to see the industry being able to navigate th

what will lilly receive as a result of this? all right. so the first thing to know is that today we filed in federal court in san francisco for the first step in approval of the settlement, because when you have a class action on behalf of a group of people, a federal court has to look at that and make sure that it's fair. so we need that to happen and for the court to approve it. and hopefully we expect the settlement to go into full effect by this summer. when it goes into effect, it has the potential to help more than 35,000 veterans discharged based on sexual orientation, who are still carrying this badge of shame, basically on their discharge papers and what it does before the process, all the burden was on the veteran to request their files, which could take years from the military, and then to put together a petition with evidence to try to prove to a board that they were unjustly discharged, that most often too the help of lawyers. again, that entire process could take 3 to 5 years. now, under these processes, the burden is no long

so, drawdowns in both lilly and novo. which do you like better?l have the optionality of an in-house oral weight loss medication. we're going to get that data during the first half of the year. i think that's important to consider, just given some of the issues novo has had with their program, and i'm -- again, i'm not really sure this drug is not one -- the data were fairly good in a vacuum, but i think they need to regain investor confidence. i like lilly, but i think the street believes both companies might underwhelm in terms of how the fourth quarters are looking. >> jared, when does merck get out of the penalty box, and has viking traded low enough where somebody's going to gobble them up? >> ah, what's up, guy? i think viking's interesting. mainly because of their oral. you know, i think the injectables at this point might be solved for. they're really going to have to prove the product on their own. but i think there's probably enough value in the oral for the stock to start working if the data continue to look good. that's really where i
