the donation from lilly endowment. inc.st unrestricted private grant the organization has ever received in its 80-year history, and its sole purpose is to increase funding for each of its 37 member institutions. we're joined now by michael lomax, president and ceo. uncf. you for being here. >> it's great to be here. geoff: you have called this grant a game changer for hbcus because until now, hbcus haven't had shared endowments. how do you intend to leverage this? >> there is a big issue here. hbcu endowments are significantly lower than non-hbcus. if you add up the endowments of all 102 hbcus, you get to about $4 billion. harvard has a $50 billion endowment. we have to close the gap. we have to close the wealth gap for these institutions. a handful of institutions keep getting all the money because they are well-known brands. where you and i went to college, howard and spellman, there are 90 some odd others that really need support. so one of the ways we felt that we could begin to break that cycle, but help everybody, was
