my name is lina and i'm a syrian american architect and writer from aleppo. dedicated to helping syrians and families and refugees, i'm honored to be here today especially as i will be speaking with author and my dear friend wendy pearlman, associated professor at north western university where she specializes in middle east politics. she has written three books, voices from syria, violence, nonviolence and occupied voices, stories of every day life from the second. she holds ph.d from harvard and conducted research in spain, germany, lebanon, jordan and turkey and israel and the west bank and the gaza strip. today we will be discussing wendy's latest book, we crossed a bridge and it trembled. voices from syria which has received high praise from viewers across international publications. the guardian has called it heart-stopping, syrians rights are too often cast as victims to be pitied, bodies to be sheltered, radicals to be denounced or threats to be feared. it can be difficult to find chances to actual sianss man beings. but she has listened. welcome, wen

lina? >> i think it's a complicated issue, because in part, section 230, immunizing platforms for liability for different things, i think can make sense, but i think what we're seeing right now is that these -- section 230 assumes that these companies are kind of neutral intermediaries, but they're actually not neutral intermediaries. they already do a lot to discriminate effectively. and so i think what we need is a regime that kind of brings the power and the responsibility that tease companies have in line with the legal obligations. and i think we also need to ensure that we're not kind of adopting a system where we have these like effective like private censors, given how much information and news travels through facebook and google. so i think it's a complicated issue, but i think the thing that -- the problem that we face right now is there this disjunction. >> cant >> kanter? >> yeah, i think at least from my perspective and from a competition perspective, there should be distinctio
