lincoln the lawyer, lincoln and the constitution, abraham lincoln and white america and lincoln andiana. his subjects probed some of the most interesting and relevant topics in lincoln's life and he has won awards for his work including one from the new york civil war roundtable. he recently had the opportunity to travel to seoul, where he addressed the korean abraham lincoln society. i know i would like to hear more about that. [laughter] how can i get on the gravy train? [laughter] today, he will talk to us about abraham lincoln and death which was published earlier this year. a review at civil war monitor states students of the 16th president will want to add this concise, thought-provoking and sensitively written volume to their bookshelves created please join me in welcoming brian dirck. [laughter] brian: it is good to be here. i want to thank you for the invitation. i have gotten to see some old friends. companion, fred, you are here somewhere. meeting lots of wonderful people. you are heroes. everybody in this room is a hero to a group of students at anderson university who a

lincoln saw me. his countenance lighted up, and he said in a loud voice that could be heard throughout the east room, here comes my friend douglass. think of the meaning of that phrase in a white house that had been an exclusively white house except for a few servants, not even all the servants. they were not even allowed to be servants. think of the meaning of that. here comes my friend douglass, after that kind of an inaugural address. there's a long receiving line, and lincoln beckons douglass to break the line, which he did when douglass visited the white house privately a year earlier. and as douglass approaches, lincoln says, douglass, i saw you in the crowd listening to my address. there is no man's opinion i value more than yours. what did you think of it? that is classic, enough about you, what about me? but still, it is great moment. [laughter] and douglass replies, mr. lincoln, it was a sacred effort. and lincoln's final words to this man with whom he had collaborated on a plan of further

lincoln a full-time job for you? >> it is now. >> was it for most of the years you did it? >> it was as things could be scheduled. that was all word-of-mouth, marketing as such. that could work into other travel schedules. and was far enough in advance that could be scheduled handily. >> from that first experience of the illinois education meeting, how did you inhabit one can? how did you learn enough to be able to be comparable in your portrayal? work,lincoln said, work, work. that is the thing. everything that has been published in the last 30 years, i have had good fortune to even meet the authors and ask those critical questions. to also go back to the primary source documents to understand what was happening in the times. 2010 why lincoln reacted to why -- to understand why look and reacted. how those two met. he can in his times -- lincoln in his times. >> how much of his repertory can you interpret? >> it started small with the lincoln and douglas debates. then i had calls. will you come and talk about the war

this event was part of the lincoln forum symposium. mr. fornieri: it is a real honor introducing someone who is kind, classy, and a careful scholar and someone who has been the heart of the lincoln forums since its inception. edna green medford is now the associate provost of equity affairs and howard university, faculty affairs at howard university, and this places her in the enviable position of having to say no to everyone. [laughter] she is the former chair of history at howard. she is the former interim dean and professor of history. her works focus on african-american history and the history of the jacksonian era, the civil war, and reconstruction. some of her works include the emancipation proclamation three views, which is now coming out in paperback. "the price of freedom, slavery, and the civil war." volume one and volume two. as well as the historical perspectives of the african burial ground, new york blacks, and the diaspora. what i have always found about her scholarship is she reminds us of the humid told of the civil war. w
