still be treated like an active scene where we find linda so with the latest and linda what have youearned in the past hour? >> reporter: well, in a couple minutes bge crews will be back out trying to turn gas off to the 900 homes affected in the area. we are live at mobile command unit and they have set up a block from where the gas main ruptured. bge has turned off the gas to 3560 homes and they have 300 more to go and that's what they are doing. we have learned that this is going to be a very tedious process and this is going to take several days to make the full repair. what happened was crews were fixing a water line when it broke and hate gas line next to it. gas was shut off to the homes and businesses in the area. there's an elementary schoolnearby frederick element and a senior living facility all without heat this morning. >> water line broke and gas line was located and the pressure could are brokeent gas main and we believe asphalt may have fallen on top of the gas main as well. >> reporter: so again we have learned starting at 7 this morning, bge crews will go door to do

linda with bge joins us. certainly a tedious effort. the first you were telling us starts with shutting off gas to the 900 buildings. >> correct. once they worked to row patient -- repair it, restoring it we have to get into each of the homes, about 900 buildings total to turn the gas off. then we can safely get the gas out of the main, make the repairs and go back in to restart gas service if it's safe to do so. >> reporter: we're talking a multiday effort where you go in and have to go back in. >> a gas outage is different from an electrical outage. 900 customers we can typically restore them on short order. in this case multiple days because you have to physically access each and every building that's been affected and you have to do it twice. we need our customer's help so we can turn the gas off. then we'll make the repairs. then we'll go back in and turn the gas on if it's shave to do so. >> reporter: outbreak for the update. again, 900 buildings affected. as linda told us they will be out here throughout the night and several day

abc 2 news health reporter linda stow is here to tell us the cause remains unclear. linda. reporter: well, charley, the cause is unclear, but we've learned the school district that's affected has its own natural gas wells. they supply the school with fuel and the wells use a controversial technique called fracking that shoots a chemical mixture into the earth to force out gas. the question now is is the gas from the wells contaminating the water, soil or air. 15 students have come down with similar tick-like symptoms. it's happening at a high school in upstate new york in the leroy school district. lana clark says her daughter lauren has been suffering since october. doctors have somethinged some of the students with conversion disorder, a stress-based condition. but many in the community fear there may be something in the environment and parents say school officials aren't doing enough to solve the mystery. >> they're frightened of lawsuits. i mean, who wouldn't be frightened of lawsuits and they're protecting themselves too and they're protecting their image. reporter: th

linda, how could this happen? reporter: charley, this is when what we know so far, the children were at a field trip at the verizon center to see disney on ice. they got separated from the group when a day care worker took six kids to the bathroom. as they come out, we're told the kids got lost in a crowd of people leaving the show. five kids were taken to the guest services office, but one girl about 2 or 3 years old ended up alone on s veet in front of the metro stop in front of the verizon center. two women who were walking back to work from lunch saw the little girl and got a police officer. >> i have a child in day care, and i'm wondering now is it safe to send them out on a field trip. >> now, the toddlers were with kids bridge day care center in camp springs, maryland. the director there says this should not have happened. they had enough staff on that field trip and all the children got back to the center safely. linda stow, abc 2 news. >>> we have a consumer alert for you this morning, two recalls to tell

commissioner linda richardson is with us also. of the things that is significant -- i mentioned that reverend dyson is the first woman ordained in the baptist church in san francisco, in 1982. it is also very significant that this year -- we should also be aware this is the 160th anniversary of three of the leading religious institutions in the african american community. the zion church, of bethel, and third baptist will all be celebrating their 160th anniversary this year. these churches were established two years after san francisco was established. thank you for joining us.
