cook. >> i'm allen martin. this is big news tonight. let's get right to lindan we'll know for sure exactly when the new bay bridge will open to traffic. linda. >> reporter: well, allen, we'll know the exact date later this week but we do know that it could be as soon as labor day or shortly thereafter. whatever the case, engineering experts say get it open sooner rather than later because this new bridge even with its bolt problems is still safer than that old span we're still all driving over. it's a go. the new bridge will open to traffic before the permanent fix for the broken bolts is completed in december. and a labor day opening is still on the table but there is a lot to consider before a date is announced. >> opening a bridge, getting the construction completed, dealing with public notice are all significant logistical details that they're making sure they fix before they make an announcement. >> reporter: as kpix 5 revealed exclusively yesterday the federal highway administration already gave the go-ahead for an early opening, after temporary shims or

linda marie macdonald >>> breaking news tonight about the bart labor dispute. what it means for your monday morning commute. >> good evening, i'm allen martin. >> i'm elizabeth cooks get right to ryan takeo who is live in oakland with how bart was betting big that there would be no strike. ryan. >> reporter: high, elizabeth. good evening to you, hi, elizabeth. it's going to be a crucial next two days. we'll break down the next 48 hours for you now. now, tonight, both sides can continue to negotiate. and all day tomorrow with no limitations. but if they don't reach an agreement by sunday morning at 9 a.m., the governor is going to court in san francisco to request a 60-day cooling-off period. he can issue an order barring a strike if he decides that it will disrupt public transportation and endanger the public's health, safety or welfare. but this was not news the unions wanted to hear. >> we wish that the governor had not made an announcement that he was going to go seek for a cooling-off period because it would have been better if both parties felt the kind of pressure necessary to arrive at a deal. so we're hoping that in spite of both parties knowing that the

linda marie macdonald >>> breaking news. only on kpix 5, mark your calendars. it now looks like the new bay bridge will in fact open on labor day weekend. good evening, i'm elizabeth cookllen martin. we're going to begin with a kpix 5 exclusive. sources telling us tonight, the date is all but set. the new bay bridge will finally open to traffic labor day weekend. christin ayers joining us from oakland with the information we have just confirmed. >> reporter: that information coming from some high ranking sources in the state transportation hierarchy. they are saying that the bridge will open on labor day weekend. that that opening will be contingent upon the vote of a three-person committee that will vote tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. to officially open the bridge on labor day weekend. they say that the governor has actually thrown his support behind a labor day opening and it's up to the committee which includes the head of caltrans and executive director of the bay area transportation authority and the head of the transportation commission to actually take a public vote that will happen at 10 a.m. and again that will be a formality at this point. they will officially a

captioner: linda marie macdonald >>> in just the past few minutes, kpix 5 has learned the new span of the bay bridge could open much earlier than any of us expected. good evening, i'm elizabeth cooki'm allen martin. we are going to begin with that breaking news about the bay bridge. kpix 5 has learned that the feds are giving caltrans the green light on a major fix for the bad bolts. here's the critical part. the approved solution could allow the bridge to open as originally planned just after labor day weekend. the news comes from the federal highway administration. the agency spent the last few weeks evaluating the idea of using steel shims to temporarily stabilize the structure. they are giving caltrans the okay to begin work on that project. as part of their findings, the federal highway administration wrote, we see no reason to delay opening the bridge to traffic prior to the shear key retrofit being completed. the ultimate fix for the bat bolds is the steal saddle that will hold the bridge in place permanently. that won't be ready until december. but today's word in the feds means the idea of opening around labor day is at least a possibility again. we expect to learn more
