and indeed lindon johnson did aspire to be a public schoolteacher. that was his first profession before entering into electoral politics. so it was a fitting site. and also what's important about it is if you look at the psychological and regional difference between, let's say washington and new york city and ivy league graduates, what johnson's site and prose showed that really the intent was extension of higher education opportunity, extension in a number of variables geographically, regionally, income. it was a dramatic wake up call and he range that bell loudly and clearly. if you look at the provisions of the original act of 1965, they -- they strike us as not as dramatic as either the final event or some of the later developments. they tend to deal from modest student loan programs, programs to recruit teachers, to provide for better teacher preparation. the real event for deliberations for 1965 to the reauthorization of the act in 1972. i think that was the crewsable that set this act -- cucible that set this act a-- crucible that set this act
