how about you, lindsay? what can we do better there terms of policies or practices to help make the age-friendly community initiative more successful? >> i think that policymakers need to incorporate the voices of older people into decision making and that policies need to support older people in remaining connected to their formal and informal support systems whenever possible. so that in new york, we have larger contingent of renters who are old er, about 80% of them rely on rent subsidies. i think that there's a real affordable housing shortage, which our mayor is trying to address through a very comprehensive plan. so there's competition for units. so, for example, when you have an older person living alone in a three-bedroom unit, there's a huge waiting list of families who need that space. so there becomes this pressure to move that person somewhere. when we think about doing that, we need to consider, what are the health ramifications of separating a person from his or her support system? because we k

one thing that struck me is that lindsay was talking about the three-bedroom apartment. it relates to a report that generations united released last year that vivian and other people were divisors on. we looked at the issue of housing to an intergenerational lens and one of the things we challenge our experts to do was to think differently. one of the the recommendations we had was think about taking lessons from other countries. in this case, it had to do with spain and their home share program. the of older adults who want to age in place and you have a young population who wants to go to university. in spain, they have managed to marry those so young people can go to university without incurring debt. about some of the potentials we are facing, how do we address age and in someone that has three bedrooms and the other population that is being burdened by student debt? x first came back with was whether it is moving in like a home share program and providing services to help that person age in place where young person who moves into a neighborhood like each for america
