i surprised at a little at your portrayal of mayor lindsay. it was more favorable. i might have imagined and. maybe that was a mistake on my part. i'm wondering if you can sort talk about him and role in advancing a sort of a a less car focused agenda? yeah, actually, i was surprised in doing research, in looking at the at the lindsay administration just documents but talking to people who worked in the lindsay administration the late jay kriegel that he was broadly right on the policies he understood long before anybody else did that we needed to get away from increasing the use of automobiles in increasing automobile infrastructure in new york city and re-embrace the subway and bus system. it was actually, you know, somewhat it was his idea to merge the tri borough the moses empire into the transit system and use the from the tolls to fund mass transit. but he was just terrible at the politic of that. and so governor rockefeller sort of stole his idea the thing lindsay was good on is understanding you now that factories are not locating in new york. it's to be whi

and that's another know similar to lindsay. i have much more nuanced picture of quill than i did when. i started out researching the 1966 transit strike. so the 1966 transit strike was important. and that that was the first time we had transit. and it actually showed how transit was to city. if we hadn't had that strike, arguably, we would not have created the mta and eventually refunded the transit system. but that course, that transit strike was mike quill's strike. he was the head of the transport workers union in a much more complex man that i think history gives him credit for. he really understood the subtlety of the changing political environment that of the things that lindsay ran and won on was. he wanted to end the old machine politics way of things lindsay in many ways was a candidate who wanted to reduce the of the public sector labor unions. one of the reasons the police didn't like him was he wanted police to work more hours at night. you know, very reasonable. an era of rising but he wasn't able to accomplish so

when this is all over, lindsay chervinsky, what are the lessons learned?legacies take a long time to unfold. if carter had died a couple weeks after leaving office we would be having very different conversations and we have today. that's horrible the because a lot of policies he put in place had not yet unfolded. we didn't know how they're going to work or if they're going to work or if his diplomatic efforts would pan out. history takes a long time to really understand exactly what peoples roles in it are. the second i think people will come away with an appreciation that much of what we celebrate harder for is not critical. it's about politics. his decency, his goodness, his humanitarian commitment, his service. those are not political things, and that is something worth remember, that there are things that are not political. the last piece and i would encourage anyone to think that we've seen all of these ceremonies and regardless of how you feel about the

lindsay, what will that look like?able about the scene where we have people lie in state? particularly former presidents? guest: the dome room in the capitol is one of the most iconic that we have to offer as the american people. there are the incredible paintings that represent historic moments in our past. it is a beautiful space. it is very -- it is severe in a very dramatic way. there have been a number of really important scenes that have taken place there over the last 200-odd years. the layering of the history, of the presidents and the other people who have rain in state, at a certain -- add a certain solemnnity, add a seriousness, add a gravitas to that space and to that moment. so when carter is lying in state he won't just be doing so by himself. he'll have those layers of history build on top of that moment. we have seen some really remarkable pictures of that happening including when reagan died, i believe nancy reagan visited the casket when it was in state, that was a poignant moment. typically we'll see

marta lindsay with walk sf says they recently visited one of the locations on ala many boulevard where they measure drivers going. 48 miles per hour in a 30 zone. all of the locations make a ton of sense. if you look at how the city chose these its base on very high crash rates, high-speed you know, they went out and tested all of these. the cameras will snap photos of rear license plates of vehicles driving 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit. then the registered owner will receive a citation in the mail ranging from 50 to $500 depending on the speed. lindsey says she's confident these efforts will slow people down. speed cameras work and they don't just work in sunriver zone. they work in preventing severe and fatal traffic crashes. sfmta has put up 8 billboards warning drivers of the cameras coming this march saying obey the speed limit. permanent signs will also be placed at 30 major city entrances that say traffic laws in san francisco are photo enforced and crews were seen monday afternoon installing new speed limit signs on gary street. i do hope that they >> e

and i'm just wondering, lindsay a lot has been written about the prickly relationship carter had with the other presidents. just wondering, from your perspective, was he a help or a hindrance to them when they were in office? >> gosh, i love this question. i've noted that in that picture as well. my guess is some of both. there is a certain quality of being in the president's club where only the people who have been in that position understand what it's like. and so i think there's a lot of affection there and a lot of support among the former presidents with the understanding that that job is nearly impossible. and there are no easy decisions that make their way to the oval office. and yet, as you noted, there is that distance. partially that's kind of a mental distance. i think that carter always felt himself to be a little bit of an outsider. he was not a part of the d.c. elite. he didn't go to ivy league institutions, had a little bit of a chip on his shoulder about that. but also partly because he did have his own ideas about foreign policy and liked to pursue them even if the pr
